Dungeons & Dragons is set to take center stage in the upcoming edition of Horrified, a well-loved tabletop game from Ravensburger. As a renowned tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) invites players into a rich fantasy universe filled with adventure and exploration. Recently, the D&D brand has seen remarkable growth, largely fueled by its cultural resurgence through sensational media appearances, such as in the hit series Stranger Things, and an influx of interest from celebrities. Parent company Hasbro is actively expanding the D&D universe through various collaborations, which include partnerships with brands like LEGO and Converse, as well as new video games and tabletop offerings from different publishers.
In a press release shared via Polygon, Ravensburger revealed its exciting new project, Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons. This latest installment will challenge players to collaboratively defeat classic monsters from the D&D lore. Although comprehensive gameplay details are still under wraps, it has been confirmed that the infamous beholder will make its appearance as a formidable adversary. Notably, this game will incorporate a D20 into its mechanics for the first time, a departure from the traditional Horrified format. Fans can anticipate its release this summer.
How Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons Works
Gameplay Mechanics: Collecting Items and Evading Monsters

The Horrified series employs familiar mechanics where players navigate a board to avoid monster encounters and gather essential items. Each monster presents a unique win condition, typically requiring players to collect designated items or reach specific objectives across the game board. Monsters can strike players, but damage can be mitigated through the sacrifice of items. A successful hit results in the advancement of a doom tracker, which indicates that the monsters are edging closer to their victory.
The game adds complexity through non-playable characters (NPCs) that players must escort to safety. A monster’s attack on an NPC results in that character’s defeat, thus pushing the doom tracker forward. However, successfully guiding an NPC to their destination rewards players with valuable one-time perks, which can be utilized to bypass monster phases or strategically relocate players. Victory is achieved only when all monsters are vanquished, while a loss occurs if the doom tracker reaches its ultimate threshold.
Our Perspective: The Perfect Union of Dungeons & Dragons and Horrified
Integrating Iconic D&D Monsters into Horrified’s Gameplay

The Horrified series ranks among my favorite semi-casual gameplay experiences, particularly around Halloween, and I proudly own every version. Generally, these games are well-balanced and offer gripping gameplay where each turn can sway the outcome of the game. The integration of Dungeons & Dragons into Horrified seems natural, given the franchise’s unique monsters that can contribute to diverse win conditions.
I am particularly intrigued by the role of the D20 in this new adaptation. Previous editions of Horrified have a multitude of components with straightforward rules, opening an exciting new avenue for gameplay innovation. I eagerly await more detailed insights about this novel Dungeons & Dragons edition as it approaches its summer launch.
