Overview of Recent Unearthed Arcana Updates

  • A new Cartographer subclass for the Artificer class has been introduced in the latest Unearthed Arcana playtest.
  • This playtest also includes reworks of abilities such as Magical Tinkering and Soul of Artifice.

Dungeons & Dragons has unveiled a significant update through its second Unearthed Arcana playtest, showcasing enhancements for the Artificer class, particularly with the introduction of the innovative Cartographer subclass. Players can anticipate that the finalized versions of these adjustments, alongside new Dragonmark feats also noted in the playtest, will be detailed in the upcoming sourcebook, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, slated for release on August 19.

In December 2024, the first Unearthed Arcana regarding the Artificer class was released, addressing the fact that it was the only official class from the 5th Edition not included in the 2024 Player’s Handbook. This initial playtest introduced various updates, such as modifications to existing features like Replicate Magic Item and Soul of Artifice, in addition to the introduction of new abilities like Magic Item Tinker, which served to enhance many subclasses associated with the Artificer.

Now, Dungeons & Dragons has released a second playtest that provides further refinements to the Artificer class, responding directly to player feedback. Notably, Magical Tinkering has been reworked into Tinker’s Magic, while the Replicate Magic Item tables have been revised. Furthermore, the Magic Item Tinker feature allows for the expenditure of spell slots to recharge items. The Soul of Artifice capstone has also undergone changes, permitting characters to restore more hit points upon sacrificing multiple magic items in life-threatening situations; additionally, it makes the Flash of Genius ability more dependable by refunding uses on failed rolls.

Future Developments in Dungeons and Dragons 5E for 2025

One of the most intriguing aspects of the new Unearthed Arcana is the introduction of the Cartographer subclass for the Artificer. This innovative archetype emphasizes mobility and strategic utility, enabling players to produce maps for their allies that offer a range of tactical advantages. As Artificers progress, they gain the ability to pinpoint both allies and enemies, teleport across the battlefield, save allies who fall unconscious, and maintain concentration against damage.

This latest playtest doesn’t just stop at subclass features; it also presents over two dozen new feats inspired by the unique Dragonmarks found in the Eberron setting. These magical brands introduce a novel approach to the Dragonmarks, shifting from the alternate racial features in Eberron: Rising from the Last War. The new feats are primarily divided into base marks along with their more powerful Greater counterparts. Additional feats include the Aberrant Dragonmark and Potent Dragonmark, along with the Boon of Siberys—an Epic Boon available at level 19.

While adjustments may still be made based on the ongoing player feedback, the Artificer class and these new feats are expected to make their debut in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, due for release on August 19. Fans eager to provide feedback on the current playtest have until March 11 to participate in the survey for this Unearthed Arcana.
