Dune: Part Two’s Score Nomination Amid Controversy
The nomination for Hans Zimmer’s score arrives amidst controversy regarding its eligibility for the Oscars. Recently, the Academy announced that Dune: Part Two would not qualify for awards in the music category due to the use of pre-existing themes, which are restricted under the Academy’s guidelines. As a sequel, many musical motifs were borrowed from the original film, sparking questions about sufficient original composition in this installment. Fortunately, the Golden Globes dismissed these concerns and recognized Zimmer’s work in its Best Original Score category—an award he previously won for the first Dune film in 2022.
Despite receiving only two nominations, which may raise eyebrows ahead of its Oscars campaign, history shows that the first Dune film secured three nominations in 2021 yet ended up with ten nominations at the Academy Awards. The competition for the Best Motion Picture – Drama is fierce, particularly with contenders like Conclave and The Brutalist in the running. Interestingly, Dune: Part Two is the sole sci-fi film on the list, raising anticipation about its potential to claim one of the night’s most prestigious awards.
The winners of the Golden Globe Awards will be revealed on January 5, 2025.
