Drug Smugglers Utilize SpaceX’s Starlink to Remotely Control Uncrewed Semi-Submersibles

A recent report by AFP reveals that SpaceX’s Starlink internet service was discovered on a vessel utilized by drug traffickers in Colombia. Colombian authorities seized the semi-submersible, although specifics regarding the seizure date have not been disclosed. Notably, the craft was sans illegal substances, indicating that the smugglers were likely conducting operational tests prior to actual shipments. Starlink’s widespread internet coverage has made it a favorite among logistics, cruise line industries, and commercial airlines, especially in areas typically lacking high-speed connectivity.

Starlink Internet’s Role in Potential Drug Smuggling Operations

As reported by AFP, the Colombian Navy recently intercepted a semi-submersible vessel that is often used for drug trafficking. The usage of autonomous submarines for transporting narcotics, particularly cocaine from Colombia to the US, is increasingly prevalent.

The autonomous nature of these vessels presents a unique challenge for law enforcement; if captured, cartel operatives can evade imprisonment. However, effective piloting of these crafts necessitates a reliable internet connection, making Starlink, with its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, an attractive option. These satellites provide elevated speeds and reduced latency, both critical for operating such vehicles and engaging in activities like video conferencing.

According to AFP, the seized vessel is capable of carrying up to 1.5 tons of narcotics. The Colombian Navy has indicated that ten similar vessels have been confiscated in 2025 alone. While this specific craft was not found with any illicit cargo, it was equipped with a Starlink dish, suggesting that the traffickers were testing its functionality in preparation for future drug transport.

Images provided by AFP depict a flat Starlink dish affixed to the boat, although the quality of the footage leaves uncertainty as to whether the dish was a professional or personal model. SpaceX offers a roaming service for Starlink users, allowing continuous internet access while in motion.

The terms of service for SpaceX’s Starlink explicitly prohibit the use of its service for unlawful activities. Users consenting to these terms are warned that their accounts may be suspended or terminated without prior notice should they engage in “fraudulent or illegal activities.”
