Updates on Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate
Dragon Quest XII, the highly anticipated addition to the iconic Japanese role-playing game series, has not seen significant updates since its announcement in early 2020 by Square Enix. The excitement peaked in May 2021 when it was confirmed that the game would utilize Epic’s cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5 and that its storyline had been completed. Notably, Orca, the team behind the successful Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, has been announced as a co-developer.
Despite these revelations, fans have been left in the dark regarding further developments. However, recent comments from franchise creator Yuji Horii at Comic-Con Napoli have shed some light on the project. Speaking to Gamereactor, he stated that he and his team are “working really hard”to ensure the game meets high expectations.
“Yes, indeed, I can’t say anything, I apologise. I am making it, putting lots of work into it. I can only say that the next work will be great too—you can look forward to it, ” he expressed.
Interestingly, Horii hinted at the possibility of Dragon Quest XII being compatible with the upcoming Nintendo console, often referred to as Switch 2. This could expand its accessibility and audience reach, but it is essential to note that this information should be approached with caution.
“Yes, I believe it could be compatible with Switch 2 as well, ” he mentioned.
While these comments suggest potential compatibility, fans should refrain from viewing this as an official announcement. Horii has encountered translation misinterpretations before; during the same event, he was mistakenly reported to have announced a remake of Chrono Trigger when he had merely expressed general interest in such a project.
In addition to the game-specific updates, Horii discussed the broader role-playing game (RPG) genre. He emphasized that the core of an RPG is its narrative rather than the open-world aspect.“In a way, RPGs are for hardcore players, ”he stated, underscoring that a well-crafted story greatly enhances the gameplay experience. He articulated that players grow stronger while enjoying a story, highlighting the dual aspect of narrative engagement and character development as central to the RPG experience.
While details on Dragon Quest XII remain sparse, fans remain optimistic as they await more concrete announcements from Square Enix. The dedication of both Horii and his team may very well lead to another unforgettable entry in this beloved franchise.
