Dragon Quest 10 Launching on a Surprising New Platform

Overview

  • Dragon Quest 10 Offline now available on mobile devices, but currently only in Japan.
  • Despite strong demand from fans, a Western version of the 2012 MMORPG Dragon Quest 10 seems unlikely.
  • This single-player offline adaptation was first introduced in Japan in 2022.

Square Enix has recently announced that Dragon Quest 10 Offline is officially available for download on mobile platforms, specifically in Japan. To attract players, the game is offered at a discounted price for a limited time. However, fans in the West should not expect a similar release anytime soon.

Originally launched in Japan in 2012, Dragon Quest 10 stands out as the only MMORPG entry in the long-standing Dragon Quest series. Although it has been ported to multiple consoles over the years, it has yet to be released in Western markets, making it one of the few significant titles to miss this opportunity. Although the game’s development team has expressed interest in localizing the game, widespread enthusiasm has unfortunately not translated into reality for international fans. Nevertheless, the recent mobile port has raised eyebrows, although Western players should manage their expectations carefully.

As highlighted by Gematsu, Dragon Quest 10 Offline, along with its expansion titled The Sleeping Hero and the Guiding Ally, is now playable exclusively on iOS and Android devices in Japan. The single-player, offline version was first released in 2022 before being introduced to other Asian regions. Currently, players can acquire the base mobile version at a promotional price of 1,960 yen (approximately $13), but this will rise to 2,800 yen ($18) post-January 28. The expansion is being offered at just 1,920 yen ($12) until the same date. This offline version boasts a more streamlined map and a simplified artistic style compared to its original multiplayer counterpart.

Initially released on the Nintendo Wii, Dragon Quest 10 has since been adapted for various platforms including the Wii U, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, and PC. The game is recognized for its engaging real-time combat mechanics and intricate job system, receiving widespread acclaim for its user-friendly approach, particularly appealing to those less versed in MMORPGs. In December 2024, a fan translation of the storyline’s cutscenes surfaced, highlighting sustained interest even after years of inactivity from Square Enix. Furthermore, in 2021, as the Dragon Quest franchise celebrated its 35th anniversary, many fans were left disappointed due to the lack of announcements regarding a localized version of Dragon Quest 10.

In Japan, the Dragon Quest series enjoys immense popularity. For example, Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age achieved sales of two million physical copies within just two days of its release. The upcoming mainline installment, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, aims to be the first in the series released simultaneously worldwide, although no specific release date has yet been confirmed.
