Dr. Dre is currently facing a $10 million lawsuit brought forth by his former marriage counselor, Dr. Charles Sophy, who alleges that the rapper executed a “malicious campaign of harassment.” The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles on October 9, and it details how Sophy claims that Dre, whose actual name is Angus Young, inundated him with “threatening and abusive text messages” back in February 2023.
Dr. Sophy previously served as the marriage counselor for Dre and his ex-wife, Nicole, and later as a mediator during their divorce, which concluded in December 2021. As per the legal documents reviewed by TMZ, Sophy alleges that Dre inaccurately accused him of initiating a smear campaign against him amid the divorce proceedings.
The counselor further contended that the rapper sent individuals posing as FBI agents to intimidate him. He expressed that the threats against his life escalated to such an extent that he felt compelled to wear a bulletproof vest while in public. As reported by That Grape Juice, Sophy’s legal representation stated:
“Instead of utilizing the mediation as a chance for resolution, [Dre] chose to misplace his frustrations regarding the mediation process onto Dr. Sophy — frustrations that emerged as a prolonged campaign filled with late-night texts, intimidation, and derogatory language against him.”
Response from Dr. Dre’s Attorney
In the court filings, Dr. Charles Sophy stated that Dr. Dre bombarded him with text messages filled with threats, calling him derogatory names and asserting he would retaliate for his actions. Sophy demanded damages amounting to $10 million in his lawsuit and requested a restraining order that would keep Dre at least 100 yards away from him.
Howard King, Dre’s attorney, responded to the lawsuit, claiming to TMZ that Sophy is utilizing this lawsuit as leverage to compel the rapper to withdraw his complaint against him with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California.
Earlier in 2023, Dre filed a complaint accusing Sophy of “gross negligence and extraordinary incompetence” during the counseling they engaged in for their marital problems.
“The lawsuit from Dr. Sophy was only initiated after he failed to persuade Mr. Young to abandon his endeavors to have Dr. Sophy held accountable for his alleged incompetence, claims that are detailed in a private complaint made by Mr. Young in 2023 with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California,” King indicated.
The complaint demanded that Sophy’s license to provide mental health services be revoked, citing a “gross violation” of acceptable medical standards. King claimed that Sophy had “inserted himself” into the divorce process by treating not only the couple but also their children.
The attorney asserted that Dre ceased counseling with Sophy upon discovering that the counselor was allegedly instigating one of his children to adopt a position against him.
“Sophy’s involvement ended when it came to light that he was encouraging one of their children to take Mr. Young’s side, including persuading his son to approach the media with unfounded claims in an effort to coerce a financial settlement that he suggested,”King elaborated.
“Dr. Sophy has continuously resisted attempts by the Medical Board to investigate these allegations, yet he has now initiated this desperate lawsuit while the scrutiny by the Medical Board intensifies.”
Dre first crossed paths with Nicole in the early 1990s, and they married in 1996, having two children, Truice and Truly. In January 2020, Nicole accused Dre of physically assaulting her on two occasions in 2000 and 2001, which he has denied.
Nicole filed for divorce in June 2020, and the divorce was finalized in 2021, with Dr. Dre being ordered to pay a $100 million settlement.
