WinRAR: The Essential Archiving Tool

- Security Enhancement: A critical vulnerability was identified, allowing previous WinRAR versions, as well as various Windows-compatible RAR and UnRAR applications, to be misled into using a predefined path specified within a malicious archive during extraction. Fortunately, Unix variants and RAR for Android remain unaffected. Our appreciation goes to whs3-detonator from the Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative for alerting us to this vulnerability.
- HTML Report Safeguard: The earlier “Generate report”command had security issues as it included original archive filenames, which could potentially permit the injection of unsafe HTML tags. The latest update mitigates this risk by replacing file name characters in HTML reports with safer strings. We owe thanks to Marcin Bobryk (github.com/MarcinB44) for reporting this issue.
- Improved Recovery Volume Testing: Users who select both “Test archived files”and “recovery volumes”now benefit from the verification of recovery volumes during testing. Previous versions only completed this verification after creating the recovery volumes, which meant they weren’t previously validated.
- Precision Improvement: The precision of time conversions within WinRAR has been upgraded to Windows 100 nanoseconds.
