Microsoft Releases ISO Images for Windows 11 on Arm

For several years, Windows on Arm OS has been accessible, yet Microsoft has not provided ISO images for users. Previously, the only options for obtaining the latest Windows 11 on Arm builds were through Windows Update or by using a virtual hard disk image (VHDX) file. Today, that changes as Microsoft has officially released ISO files for Windows 11 on Arm.

Enhanced Installation Options

Similar to the x64 Windows 11 ISO files, the new Arm64 ISO files allow users to accomplish several tasks, including:

  • Creating virtual machines
  • Upgrading within an existing Windows installation
  • Generating bootable media for installing Windows on Arm on other devices

Notably, Microsoft is releasing a multi-edition ISO, meaning users will need to enter their product key to unlock the appropriate edition for their systems.

Driver Considerations for Installation

On the download page, Microsoft highlighted the possible necessity of including drivers from the hardware OEM to ensure that the installation media can boot correctly. This is crucial for a smooth installation experience.

Current Device Compatibility

For those utilizing the latest Windows on Arm devices powered by the Snapdragon X Series processors, the new ISO permits installations without requiring additional OEM drivers. Although Windows will install on these devices, the full functionality will be limited until the appropriate drivers are installed. Users are encouraged to connect via ethernet using a dongle or dock to access Windows Update for driver downloads.

Conversely, devices equipped with earlier Snapdragon processor generations, such as the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 or Gen 2, will require drivers from the OEM to be injected into the installation image. Failure to do so may result in boot failures or an unusable state post-installation.

Implications for Users

This recent release significantly enhances flexibility for users of Windows on Arm by simplifying both the installation and management processes. With the availability of ISO images, Windows on Arm becomes increasingly accessible to a wider audience. Users can download the latest Windows 11 Arm64 ISO directly from Microsoft’s official site.
