Task Explorer: An Advanced Task Management Tool

Task Explorer is an innovative tool designed for advanced task management, focusing not just on tracking applications, but also on understanding the specific actions these applications are performing. The user interface is tailored for efficiency, providing real-time information about processes with minimal clicks. It eliminates the need for multi-window navigation, instead displaying additional details for selected entries directly in the lower section of the panel. This allows users to seamlessly browse through detailed insights using arrow keys, and most data are continuously refreshed, offering valuable dynamism in metrics.

On the Windows platform, Task Explorer utilizes the robust ProcessHacker library to enhance its functionality.

Key Features of Task Explorer

  • The Thread Panel: This feature provides a stack trace of the selected thread, offering critical insights into the application’s current operations. It is particularly useful for identifying deadlocks and diagnosing performance issues.
  • Memory Panel: Users can view and edit the process memory with an advanced memory editor and robust string search capabilities.
  • Handles Panel: This panel displays all open handles along with essential details such as file names, current file positions, and sizes, allowing users to monitor file activities by running programs.
  • Socket Panel: This feature enumerates all open connections and sockets for each process, including data rate information. Additionally, users can enable pseudo UDP connection displays derived from ETW data, allowing for effective monitoring of program communications.
  • Modules Panel: Displays all loaded DLLs and memory-mapped files with options to unload or inject DLLs. The application includes various other panels, such as Token, Environment, Windows, GDI, .NET, etc. Users can open Task Info panels in separate windows for simultaneous viewing of multiple processes.
  • System Monitor: The application features a well-structured toolbar that showcases comprehensive graphs of not only CPU usage but also the utilization of objects, handles, networks, and disk access.
  • System Info Panels: These panels provide insights into all open files and sockets by programs, as well as system services management, including control over drives.
  • Performance Graphs: Offering detailed visualizations of CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, and GPU usage, these panels can be collapsed to maximize space. Alternatively, the system info panels can be opened in their own window via the toolbar.
