Media Player Classic – Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free, open-source multimedia player designed for Windows. It builds upon the original Guliverkli project (which is no longer actively maintained) and introduces a variety of enhancements and bug fixes. As the successor to the original Media Player Classic, MPC-HC may not be flashy, but it supports almost every media format available.
MPC-HC utilizes DXVA technology to delegate decoding tasks to your modern graphics card, significantly improving your viewing experience. Additionally, MPC-HC is compatible with both physical and software DVDs, featuring menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles.

Many users may not be aware of the impressive features added to MPC-HC in recent years. Here’s a rundown of essential options and functionalities that everyone should explore:
Dark Interface
- Navigate to Menu > View > Dark Theme
- The dark theme allows for customization of the seekbar height and toolbar button sizes.
- Access via Options > Advanced
Video Preview on Seekbar
- Enable through Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seekbar
Adjust Playback Speed
- Go to Menu > Play > Playback rate
- The default step for adjusting playback rate is 2x, but can be customized to smaller increments (like 10%):
- Options can be found at Options > Playback > Speed step
- For optimal playback speed adjustments, use the internal audio renderer, which includes automatic pitch correction.
- Access via Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer
Remember Playback Position
- Utilize Options > Player > History to resume from your last playback position.
- Quickly navigate through a video using Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
- Switch between files in a folder with PageUp/PageDown.
- Automate actions at the end of a file such as progressing to the next file or closing the player.
- Settings available at Options > Playback > After Playback (set permanently) and Menu > Play > After Playback (for the current file only).
- A-B Repeat: Loop a specific video segment using the markers set by [ and ].
Video Manipulation Options
- Access rotation, flipping, stretching, and zoom using Menu > View > Pan&Scan.
- These actions can also be performed with designated hotkeys.

- Edit controls through Options > Player > Keys
Stream Videos from YouTube and Other Sites
MPC-HC allows for direct streaming from YouTube and various other video sites:
- Place yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC installation directory.
- Open website URLs by navigating to Menu > File > Open File/URL.
- Download videos easily via Menu > File > Save a copy.
- For additional YDL configuration options, go to Options > Advanced.
- Options are available to specify the location of the. exe if you choose not to place it in the MPC-HC folder.
HDR Video Support
- This feature requires the use of madVR or MPC Video Renderer.
- After installation, you can select these renderers via Options > Playback > Output.
Subtitle Downloads
- Search for and download subtitles automatically or manually (press D) through Options > Subtitles > Misc.
In addition to these new features, many bug fixes and internal improvements have been made over the years, ensuring better performance and stability. The player also includes updated internal codecs, with support introduced for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, and more.
