Media Player Classic – Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a free, open-source media player designed for Windows, delivering both video and audio playback capabilities. Originating from the now inactive Guliverkli project, MPC-HC has been enhanced with numerous features and fixes. As an evolution of the original Media Player Classic, this player is not visually extravagant but is compatible with almost all media formats.
Utilizing DXVA technology, MPC-HC offloads decoding tasks to your modern graphics card, significantly improving your viewing experience. Furthermore, it supports both physical and software DVDs, complete with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitle options.
Feature Highlights
Many users may not be aware of the impressive features that MPC-HC has introduced over the years. Below, we present a compilation of essential options and functionalities:
Dark Mode Interface
- Navigate to Menu > View > Dark Theme to enable.
- In dark theme mode, you can also modify the seek bar height and toolbar button sizes.
- Adjust settings under Options > Advanced.
Seekbar Video Preview
- Enable it under Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar.
Customizable Playback Speed
- Access Playback rate under Menu > Play.
- The default playback speed button increases by 2x, but this can be modified to smaller increments (like 10%):
- Adjust this setting via Options > Playback > Speed step.
- Best results for speed adjustment occur with the internal audio renderer, which includes pitch correction.
- Configure audio output settings under Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer.
Playback Position Memory
- Set under Options > Player > History.
- Quickly navigate through videos using Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
- Jump between files in a directory using PageUp/PageDown.
- Automate actions at the end of a file, like moving to the next file or closing the player:
- Find these options under Options > Playback > After Playback (persistent setting) or Menu > Play > After Playback (specific to the current file).
- The A-B repeat feature allows you to loop specific segments of a video. Use [ and ] to set start and end points.
Video Manipulation Features
- Access options to rotate, flip, mirror, stretch, or zoom your video via Menu > View > Pan&Scan.
- These adjustments can also be executed using hotkeys (listed below).
Extensive Keyboard Shortcuts and Mouse Functions
- Customize them under Options > Player > Keys.
Direct Streaming from YouTube and Other Sites
Stream content from YouTube and numerous other video platforms:
- Place yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe into the MPC-HC installation directory.
- Open URLs within the player via Menu > File > Open File/URL.
- Download videos directly with Menu > File > Save a copy.
- Additional YDL configuration options are available in Options > Advanced.
- You can also specify the location of the. exe if you prefer not to place it in the MPC-HC folder.
HDR Video Playback
- This feature is available when using madVR or MPC Video Renderer.
- Select the renderers post-installation in:
- Options > Playback > Output.
Subtitle Management
- Search and download subtitles automatically or manually (press D):
- Find settings under Options > Subtitles > Misc.
Apart from the aforementioned features, MPC-HC has undergone numerous bug fixes and internal enhancements over the years, resulting in improved performance and stability, along with updated internal codecs. Support for CUE sheets and WebVTT subtitles has been added as well.
