DOOM: The Dark Ages Release and Multiplatform Support
Scheduled for release on May 15, 2025, DOOM: The Dark Ages made headlines during the Xbox Developer Direct event, where id Software shared extensive details along with a Q&A session for the media. This highly anticipated title will officially be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
Possible Release on Nintendo Switch 2
In an intriguing development, Spanish leaker eXtas1s has suggested that DOOM: The Dark Ages may also make its way to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to him, the official announcement is pending Nintendo’s approval, which is necessary for new games heading to the Switch 2, as opposed to the original Switch.
Microsoft’s Commitment to Multiplatform Gaming
Microsoft has demonstrated a strong commitment to embracing multiplatform gaming, with Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reiterating this vision in a recent video Q&A on Danny Peña’s YouTube channel. Spencer expressed his desire for gamers to experience the titles produced by Microsoft across various devices. The executive emphasized that while some platforms remain exclusive, the goal is to expand accessibility:
I want people to be able to experience the games that we build, the services that we offer, on as many devices as we can.[…] Not every experience will be the same. We obviously love the native experience we have on our own platform and our own hardware and that’s something that will continue for us, but we’re not going to put walls up around where people can engage with the great games our studios are building.
Nintendo’s Impact and Collaboration
Spencer also took a moment to praise Nintendo, stating:
Who would ever bet against the success of that team? […] I just always applaud the moves that they make. The Switch is a massive success and I think the Switch 2 will be as well.
His relationship with Nintendo appears positive, as he shared that he recently congratulated their CEO about the innovative steps they are taking, particularly praising the benefits of a larger screen.
Technical Considerations for Switch 2
While the prospect of DOOM: The Dark Ages running on the Nintendo Switch 2 is exciting, there are concerns regarding technical capabilities. The acclaimed 2016 reboot successfully launched on the original Switch, aided by Panic Button’s expertise, which also facilitated DOOM Eternal‘s port to Nintendo’s platform. Therefore, the rumor surrounding the new console’s capability is not without merit.
Nevertheless, it’s essential to highlight that Switch 2 users may not access all the advanced features available on other platforms. On PC, players will benefit from sophisticated technologies like path tracing and NVIDIA DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. Although there are whispers about the Switch 2 supporting NVIDIA DLSS 2 Super Resolution alongside Ray Reconstruction (3.5), it might lack support for Frame Generation.
As we await further confirmations from Nintendo, the excitement surrounding DOOM: The Dark Ages and its potential multiplatform reach continues to build.
