Overview of Doom: The Dark Ages
- The director, Hugo Martin, reassures fans that Doom: The Dark Ages will not conclude the reboot trilogy.
- Anticipation builds among Xbox enthusiasts, who have been captivated by the new combat mechanics and features showcased in the game.
- Martin hints at the potential for future Doom installments, expressing his willingness to continue developing the series.
In a recent statement, Doom: The Dark Ages‘ director, Hugo Martin, alleviated concerns that the upcoming title would mark the end of the reboot trilogy. This game serves as a prequel to the acclaimed 2016 Doom reboot and its follow-up, Doom Eternal, first unveiled during the Xbox Summer Game Fest Showcase in June. With significant buzz surrounding its launch, Doom: The Dark Ages is poised to be one of the standout titles for Xbox in 2025.
Last week at the Xbox Developer Direct, the game was prominently featured, captivating fans with an in-depth exploration of its various gameplay systems. A highlight of the showcase was the combat mechanics, which introduced players to the Doom Slayer’s formidable new medieval melee arsenal, including weaponry like a flail, a mace, and an innovative throwable saw-toothed shield, which doubles as a defense tool against incoming attacks. The demonstration also revealed revamped glory kills and an array of bold new firearms.
The Future of the Doom Franchise

Given the overwhelming popularity and commercial success that the franchise has achieved since its revival in 2016, Martin’s enthusiasm for creating more titles seems entirely logical. It would be premature for a prequel, like Doom: The Dark Ages, to act as the series’ finale. Although the narrative of Doom Eternal, especially its DLCs, appeared to conclude the reboot’s storyline neatly, there remains potential for additional explorations within its universe.
“This [Doom: The Dark Ages] isn’t designed to be the end of something… I wouldn’t have a problem doing this for a long time.”
While Martin’s commitment bodes well for fans of Doom, there’s likely disappointment among enthusiasts of id Software’s other franchises, such as Quake and Rage. Quake, similar to the original Doom series, enjoyed massive success in the 90s, yet fans have longed for a reboot that captures the spirit of the original. In contrast, Rage 2 did not meet expectations, leading to diminished hopes for future titles in that series. Regardless, it appears that id Software is focusing on Doom moving forward.
While exciting developments are on the horizon, fans will need to be patient, as it may take several years before id Software announces what’s next for the Doom franchise. Currently, all eyes are on the impending release of Doom: The Dark Ages on May 15, which will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PC, and PlayStation 5, launching on the first day on Xbox Game Pass.
