Sony to Remove Legacy PlayStation Themes on PS5
In an exciting but bittersweet announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed that it will discontinue the legacy themes commemorating the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation on February 1, 2025. However, fans may have reason to rejoice, as the company indicated the potential return of these popular themes, thanks to overwhelming positive feedback from the community.
Commemorating 30 Years of PlayStation
Initially launched in late 2024, these limited-time PS5 themes celebrate the rich history of PlayStation, which began with its first console release in Japan on December 3, 1994. Each theme uniquely represents a different generation of PlayStation gaming, including the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4.
A Dive Into the Themes
The PS1 theme, for instance, nostalgically revisits the original boot screen and features the iconic Sony Computer Entertainment logo. These themes not only enhance the user experience on the PS5 but also connect players to the legacy of the brand.
Community Response
Following the announcement of the themes’ removal, SIE expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic responses from players:
Thank you very much for the overwhelming response to the limited-time theme based on the original PlayStation®, PS2®, PS3®, and PS4®!

Translation of the Announcement
We have received a lot of responses to the time-limited themes modeled after the first PlayStation, the PS2, the PS3, and the PS4. Thank you!
We will cease providing these 4 themes tomorrow on Saturday, February 1. But after receiving positive receptions from everyone, we will work on the development to make it possible to once again provide these specially-designed themes within a few more months.
Additional Celebrations for the Anniversary
To further celebrate this significant milestone, SIE also released a limited batch of PS5 consoles, DualSense controllers, and PS Portals, all inspired by the PS1 design. In collaboration with Grapht, the company produced exclusive PS1-themed merchandise, ranging from tote bags to keychains, allowing fans to commemorate the occasion in style.
Conclusion
Though the legacy themes are set to leave the PlayStation 5 platform on February 1, 2025, SIE’s commitment to potentially reintroducing these beloved themes provides hope for fans eager to keep a piece of PlayStation history. Stay tuned for updates on the return of these iconic designs!
