“Doctor Doom Becomes Sorcerer Supreme: The Best Marvel Character Yet?”

“Doctor Doom Becomes Sorcerer Supreme: The Best Marvel Character Yet?”

While Doctor Strange has held the esteemed title of Sorcerer Supreme for an extended period, Doctor Doom undeniably emerges as Marvel’s most formidable and multifaceted Sorcerer Supreme. Beyond his mastery of the mystic arts, Doom exhibits an unparalleled intellectual prowess and exceptional diplomatic skills. His increasing influence over global affairs is not merely incidental, but rather an anticipated outcome. Presently, Doom possesses the capability to reshape his vision of a perfect world.

In anticipation of the nine-issue special series titled *One World Under Doom*, set to debut later this February, lead writer Ryan North provided insights during an interview with Marvel Comics about what readers can expect.

When queried about the challenges Marvel’s heroes may face under the reign of the Emperor Supreme, North emphasized the immense power that Doctor Doom holds at this juncture. The character finds himself in a morally complex role, genuinely believing that his actions are in the world’s best interest. Doom has accumulated vast knowledge and incredible power, driven by the grandeur of his aspirations.

Doctor Doom: Reigning at the “Peak of Magic”

Doctor Doom stands above Marvel's other heroes.

“Doom is in a place where he’s at the peak of magic and at the peak of the science. That outclasses him, not just physically, but he’s always been very smart. You’re not going to punch Iron Man or Squirrel Girl enough that they’ll agree that you are the best boss. That’s just not who these people are. You have to convince them. Part of the conflict is that at the end of this, he wants this to be recognized. He wants them to support him. He wants to show the world that he can do it better than anyone.” – Ryan North

For decades, Doctor Doom has stood at the pinnacle of both scientific and mystical disciplines. His journey began in a Romani camp on the outskirts of Latveria, where he was first introduced to the mystical arts by his mother. Despite his academic pursuits in science in New York, the tragic fate of his mother—lost due to a deal with Mephisto—instigated Doom’s relentless quest for knowledge.

While he strives to eclipse the intellect of Reed Richards, Doom has long surpassed Doctor Strange as Marvel’s mightiest Sorcerer Supreme, rivaling even Merlin. Strange himself has acknowledged this truth multiple times, recognizing that if anything were to befall him, Doom would inevitably be a leading candidate for the Sorcerer Supreme title. This perspective stems from Doom’s willingness to explore magical realms that even Strange would hesitate to approach, showcasing his ability to manipulate magic beyond conventional boundaries.

As Marvel navigates its forthcoming significant event, Ryan North delves deeper into the significance of Doctor Doom’s power, particularly in relation to his elevated status. Victor von Doom epitomizes a complex character whose ego transcends mere arrogance. He has convinced himself that his vision of global unity is the path to peace. While his intentions may resonate with some, it is his ego that drives his nefarious actions. Now more than ever, Doom seeks validation and recognition, yet an unchecked ego can respond with intensity when challenged.

“For me, it’s less taking it to everyone else and more focusing it on Doom. I think more than any other super villain, Doom is concerned about appearances. He’s this wonderful mix of ridiculous confidence and pinching insecurity, especially around Reed, who is the one man who is smarter than him— and that is something he can’t accept.”

“Doom shows up and he’s like, ‘I have more power and I’m going to use it wisely.’ He’s willing to say, ‘the best form of government is putting the best guy in charge and, good news, I’m the best guy!’ He’s trying to prove that the ends justify the means.” – Ryan North

Targeting Doom’s ego might be the most effective way to dismantle him; however, he has constructed a formidable barrier of magic and science around this vulnerability. During his reign as God Emperor Doom on Battleworld, a mere distraction alongside a plea to his conscience proved sufficient to topple him. To mask his shortcomings, Doom passionately pursues knowledge and power with a devotion that Stephen Strange envies. Though his ego may ultimately lead to his downfall, it’s undeniable that Doctor Doom will retain his position as Sorcerer Supreme with unmatched authority.
