During a press conference after the NCAA women’s basketball championship game between Louisiana State University (LSU) and the University of Iowa, Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, showed his support for NCAA player Angel Reese as she became emotional.
Despite a strong effort from Reese’s team LSU, they were ultimately defeated by Iowa in the Elite Eight round of March Madness with a score of 87-94. Iowa’s Caitlin Clark’s impressive 41 points led her team to victory, knocking out the defending champions LSU and securing their spot in the final four.
Following their defeat, Angel Reese, Flau’jae Johnson, and Hailey Van Lith addressed the media. Reese shared that since winning the NCAA women’s basketball championship in 2023, she has received numerous death threats and intimidating messages. However, she remained resilient and stood strong for her team.
“I’ve been through so much. I’ve seen so much. I’ve been attacked so many times. Death threats. I’ve been sexualized. I’ve been threatened,”Angel Reese said. “I just try to stand strong for my teammates because I don’t want them to see me down and not be there for them. All this has happened since I won the national championship.”
Flau’jae Johnson, the teammate of Angel Reese, defended her by stating that the public did not truly know her and that she possessed great resilience.
Despite receiving racist remarks and death threats, Reese received a message of support from Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, who reshared the video and urged others to refrain from spreading hate.
“Be a decent sports fan: talk your talk, but do not send death threats or racist harassment,”Ohanian wrote on his X(formerly Twitter) account.
Alexis Ohanian: An Outspoken Supporter of Women’s Sports and Gender Equality
Alexis Ohanian, the husband of Serena Williams, is a strong advocate for women’s sports. He has not only shown his support for Williams, but also backed his beliefs by investing in the NWSL franchise Angel City FC, demonstrating his commitment to promoting women’s sports.
Despite the recent NCAA women’s basketball championship, the Reddit co-founder reposted his two-year-old statement advocating for equal opportunities for women’s basketball in order to generate profits, highlighting the importance of this issue.
“2 years ago 😆 and some of y’all were really my replies saying I was wrong. Thank you!”Ohanian wrote.
During an interview with Bloomberg Quicktales, Ohanian reiterated the same thoughts, emphasizing the lack of investment in women’s sports throughout its history. He also mentioned that developing a strong fan base and securing brand partnerships would be crucial in recognizing its true worth.
“I mean it’s the curse of low expectations. When we look back on the legacy of underinvestment in the last, call it 50 years, it will not just be a legacy of sexism and racism, which it is. It’ll be a legacy of gross business incompetence. You build a rabid, dogged fan base all over the world. You continue to raise the bar on brand partnerships. You continue to demonstrate the value,”Ohanian said.
