Overview of Recent Updates to Dishonored 2
- Dishonored 2 has unexpectedly received a minor update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
- This update includes various bug fixes and some updates related to language support.
- Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Dishonored 2, is currently engaged in the development of Marvel’s Blade.
Originally launched in late 2016, Dishonored 2 quickly became one of the standout titles of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era. It is the sequel to the acclaimed 2012 game and introduces a new protagonist, Emily Kaldwin. Notable missions such as The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab encapsulated the game’s signature intricate design and gameplay mechanics that captured the attention of gamers worldwide.
While Arkane Lyon, the studio that developed Dishonored 2, gained further acclaim with the release of Deathloop in 2021, its sister studio, Arkane Austin, faced challenges recently, particularly with the major studio closures announced for 2024, which affected teams like Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks—though Tango has since been partially revived by Krafton. Arkane Austin is noted for its work on the original Dishonored, the sci-fi adventure Prey released in 2017, and Redfall, a co-op looter shooter that received mixed reviews earlier this year. Meanwhile, Arkane Lyon persists as a vibrant entity in the gaming industry, now focusing its efforts on Marvel’s Blade in collaboration with Marvel Games.
The recent update for Dishonored 2, weighing in at approximately 230MB on Steam, is characterized mainly by bug fixes and updates for language settings. Notably, while the update is small, Xbox users are required to download a full update for the game’s substantial 40GB size. According to reports from SteamDB, these changes aim to enhance the overall experience of the game but do not significantly alter gameplay performance.
Surprise Update: Players Want More
While this unexpected update has shed some light on technical improvements, many enthusiasts are left feeling disillusioned due to the absence of a much-desired performance enhancement, particularly the transition to a smooth 60 FPS experience. Unlike other Arkane titles which benefit from this upgrade on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 remains limited to 30 FPS. Even the original Dishonored and its spin-off, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, have optimized performance thanks to console enhancements. Speculation persists that Arkane Lyon may eventually introduce an FPS patch coinciding with the game’s tenth anniversary in 2026; however, such a wait could test the patience of devoted fans.
Despite the fervent hopes of many for a third installment in the Dishonored series, it seems doubtful that such a project would materialize in the near future, potentially delaying the output of Arkane titles overall, especially following the reported downsizing of Arkane Austin. Currently, Arkane Lyon remains focused on completing Marvel’s Blade, although no official release date has yet been disclosed.
