Recently, we shared highlights of the most significant features rolled out for Windows 11 in 2024. Now, as we move into 2025, we’ve compiled a fresh list of the top ten features that are currently in development for this operating system. These features range from enhancements in preview builds available to Windows Insiders to new functionalities that may require some configuration to activate.
1. Enhanced Auto HDR
Accessible to all Windows Insiders
For users with HDR-capable monitors or TVs, switching HDR mode in Windows 11 involves a toggle that can become tedious, especially when frequently watching HDR movies or gaming. Although keeping HDR enabled is an option, it can negatively affect the operating system’s appearance. Upcoming updates aim to streamline this, enabling Windows 11 to automatically detect HDR content and facilitate HDR streaming without manual adjustments.
2. Smaller Taskbar Buttons
Currently unavailable
While it’s disappointing to commend Microsoft for reinstating a feature actually present in earlier versions, it’s noteworthy that new code hints at the return of smaller taskbar buttons. This option was present since Windows 7 but disappeared with the launch of Windows 11. Fortunately, it appears that Microsoft is considering this adjustment, much to the relief of users longing for a more compact interface.
3. Gamepad Keyboard Functionality
Available to Windows Insiders
This feature is a hit among gamers. Initially released to all users before being rolled back due to unspecified issues, the gamepad keyboard layout is designed for those who favor controllers over traditional mouse and keyboard setups. Enthusiasts eagerly await its return as it significantly enhances the gaming experience on PCs.
4. Novel Start Menu Layouts

With Windows 10 users preparing to transition to Windows 11, they can look forward to improved Start menu options. Microsoft is experimenting with new layouts, including “Category”and “Grid”views, designed to better organize applications. The “Category”view sorts apps into segments like Entertainment and Productivity, while the “Grid”view presents applications in an alternative format. The effectiveness of these layouts remains to be seen, as many users may still prefer third-party options.

For owners of modern devices equipped with Wi-Fi 7, like the Copilot+ PC, the ability to generate 6 GHz hotspots for compatible gadgets is on the horizon. While this feature may not be revolutionary, it demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to keep Windows 11 aligned with contemporary technological advancements.
6. Redesigned Battery Indicator
Available to Dev Channel Insiders
The current battery indicator in Windows 11 is often criticized for its size and legibility issues, particularly its inconsistency with the lock screen version. Soon, users can expect a revamped battery indicator that will display the remaining battery percentage directly in the tray area, ensuring quick and easy access to essential power information.
7. Updates to File Explorer
Currently disabled
File Explorer is set for significant improvements, particularly in how it handles external links. Users have long been frustrated by the software opening new windows instead of tabs when accessing linked files. Future updates will empower users to choose whether new links open in a new window or tab, enhancing productivity and workflow within File Explorer.
8. Enhanced PC Specifications Cards
Available for Insider testing
Microsoft is introducing a more streamlined way for users to view PC specifications without navigating through multiple Task Manager tabs or sections in the Settings app. The forthcoming “About”page will consolidate essential information such as processor details, graphics card, RAM, and more, into a single view, making it easier for users to monitor their system performance.
9. Fresh Share UI

Taking a cue from effective layout features such as Snap Layouts, Microsoft is planning a new sharing interface that simplifies the process of sharing files through a drag-and-drop mechanism. Once activated, users can quickly transfer files from File Explorer to designated applications across a dedicated area at the top of the screen, enhancing usability, particularly on touch-enabled devices.
10. AI-Driven Windows Search
Available for Insider testing; requires specific hardware
One of the most anticipated features is the AI-fueled Windows Search, enabling users with Copilot+ PCs to utilize natural language when searching for files and images. Instead of recalling exact file names, users can simply input phrases like “my presentation about elephants, ”streamlining the search process significantly. Additionally, a new semantic search will assist users in navigating the Settings app by interpreting straightforward queries, greatly benefiting those new to Windows 11.
