iPadOS 26: A Step Towards Laptop Replacement
On June 9, during the WWDC 2025 event, Apple unveiled iPadOS 26, showcasing a plethora of enhancements designed to elevate the iPad’s functionality. This latest iteration is geared towards fulfilling Apple’s long-held ambition of transforming the iPad into a viable laptop replacement.
Enhanced Window Management and User Interface
Notably, iPadOS 26 introduces a sophisticated window management system, providing users the flexibility to position any window at their discretion. The addition of a dedicated menu bar and classic window controls borrowed from macOS further enriches the user experience, making multitasking and app navigation more intuitive.
Revamped Design Aesthetic
Complementing the functional upgrades, the operating system sports a modernized user interface featuring “Liquid Glass”elements, akin to the designs of Windows Vista and Windows 7. This fresh aesthetic not only modernizes the look but also enhances usability.
Compatible Devices for iPadOS 26
It is important to note that not all iPads are eligible for this upgrade. The following models will be able to transition from iPadOS 18 to the latest version:
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation (A12X) and later
- iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation (A12X) and later
- iPad Air 3rd generation (A12) and later
- iPad 8 (A12) and later
- iPad mini 5th generation (A12) and later
Device Compatibility Changes
With this release, Apple has decided to discontinue support for the iPad 7, which utilizes the A10 Fusion chip. Moving forward, only iPads equipped with the A12 chipset (standard or X) will be supported by iPadOS, marking a significant shift in Apple’s approach to its tablet lineup.
Developer Beta and Public Testing
The initial developer beta of iPadOS 26 is currently available. Apple has plans to initiate public testing in July; however, specific dates are yet to be announced, so it is advisable to keep an eye out for updates from the company.
