Filming Locations for Escape at Dannemora

1. Clinton Correctional Facility, Dannemora, New York

Ben Stiller aimed to create an authentic atmosphere for the series, which is why filming at the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York was essential. This high-security prison houses around 2,500 male inmates, prompting initial hesitations from the Department of Corrections about granting filming permissions.

Through various channels, Stiller obtained approval from Governor Andrew Cuomo. The production team was allowed limited access to critical areas of the prison, particularly the North Yard, where key events unfolded, leading to two days of filming that successfully captured the prison’s unsettling ambiance.

2. Abandoned Warehouse, Brooklyn, New York

In the series, a prison tailor shop worker plays a crucial part, particularly in relation to the escape. To depict this, the production crew transformed a Brooklyn warehouse to mimic the tailor shop where the inmates crafted their escape plan.

By filming in the repurposed factory, they were able to portray the confined underground scenes, including the escape tunnels, resembling the prison’s architecture. This approach achieved a realistic representation of the escape without the limitations imposed by actual prison security.

3. Pennsylvania Stand-in Prisons

Key scenes were also filmed at an abandoned jail in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This location provided the liberty to capture crucial footage that would have been more difficult to obtain at Dannemora.

Initially, other prisons in Pennsylvania were considered, but they lacked the distinctive look of Clinton, leading to a decision that preserved the series’ visual coherence.

4. Dannemora Town and Surroundings

Several scenes depicting the manhunt for Matt and Sweat post-escape were filmed in the vicinity, making use of the rugged terrain and dense forests. The production effectively combined real-life footage of the prison with manhunt scenes, enhancing the series’ authenticity.

A Deeper Insight into Escape at Dannemora

Escape at Dannemora is inspired by the actual events involving convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in June 2015 with assistance from Joyce Mitchell, a prison employee who smuggled in tools.

The series highlights the grim realities of prison life through its complex escape plan, which involved cutting through walls and navigating hidden tunnels beneath the facility. Once they broke free, Matt and Sweat accessed a nearby manhole, leading to a nationwide manhunt that lasted three weeks and cost taxpayers approximately $23 million.

While on the run, Matt was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement. Meanwhile, Sweat was apprehended near the Canadian border and returned to custody. Joyce Mitchell later pled guilty and was released on parole in 2020, after serving nearly five years.
