Wargaming, renowned for its hit franchises including World of Tanks, Warplanes, and Warships, is venturing into a new realm with the announcement of Steel Hunters. This innovative mech-themed hero shooter was revealed during the highly anticipated The Game Awards 2024 hosted by Geoff Keighley, showcasing the studio’s commitment to expanding its portfolio.

Visionary Leadership Sparks New Development

CEO Victor Kislyi expressed the significance of this transition for Wargaming:

A Unique Backstory and Gameplay Mechanics

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the lore of Steel Hunters revolves around a rare extraterrestrial resource known as Starfall. Corporations and factions have transformed the titular Hunters into formidable combat machines, racing across the remnants of a lush yet deserted Earth in pursuit of this valuable asset.

Steel Hunters amalgamates elements from three prominent shooter genres: hero shooters, Battle Royale, and Extraction. Players will choose their unique Hunters and dive into a PvPvE arena, completing various objectives to level up and enhance their equipment. Each game session culminates in an intense final showdown at the extraction point.

Strategic Depth and Customization

Unlike traditional shooters that favor rapid-fire tactics, Steel Hunters encourages players to understand their chosen Hunters’ unique abilities, cooldowns, and synergies. Strategic gameplay will be crucial, with maps designed to facilitate flanking and ambush tactics, as well as destructible environments that enhance the combat experience.

Customization options allow players to tailor their Hunters with distinctive builds, fostering creativity through unique gear combinations. Additionally, collectible items and cosmetic enhancements provide further avenues for personal expression within the game.

Upcoming Playtests and Release Information

A closed ten-day playtest for Steel Hunters is set to launch soon on PC, and players can sign up here. The game is also available for wishlisting on Steam, with an official release targeted for next year. Notably, there are considerations for potential console releases in the future.
