Google Enhances NotebookLM with Deep Research Feature
Google is set to expand its revolutionary Deep Research feature to its NotebookLM application, an AI-driven platform designed for comprehensive research and note-taking. This feature, previously found in the Gemini app and within Google Search’s AI Mode, facilitates the creation of extensive reports following intricate searches.
Capabilities of Deep Research in NotebookLM
With Deep Research integrated into NotebookLM, users can now formulate detailed research plans, navigate through an extensive array of websites for relevant articles, and compile structured reports based on the sourced information. This functionality not only streamlines the research process but also allows users to augment their notebooks with additional sources while the system operates in the background.
How to Access Deep Research
To utilize this new feature, simply navigate to the Sources panel located on the left side of your NotebookLM interface. From there, select Web as your source. Clicking the drop-down menu allows you to choose Deep Research. Next, input your query in the provided text box and initiate the search effortlessly.
New File Type Support in NotebookLM
In addition to the Deep Research feature, Google has introduced support for several new file types that enhance the functionality of NotebookLM:
- Images: Upload handwritten notes, brochures, or other types of visuals.
- Google Drive: Seamlessly add PDF files from Google Drive and link other Drive documents as URLs, mimicking the integration of websites and YouTube videos.
- Google Sheets: Upload spreadsheets directly and inquire about their data effectively.
- MS Word: Support for.docx files allows users to analyze text from Word documents, including notes and drafts.
Availability and Additional Features
These enhancements, including the Deep Research feature and the new file supports, are expected to roll out to all NotebookLM users within the upcoming week. However, the image support will be introduced in the following weeks. This expansion follows a series of updates from Google, which also includes conversation memory functionality that allows NotebookLM to recall previous interactions.
Furthermore, NotebookLM has improved its Video Overviews by utilizing the Nano Banana model. It now supports native LaTeX rendering and introduces a Learning Guide feature, enabling users to pose open-ended questions for a deeper understanding of complex subjects.
