Currently, Intel’s desktop processors equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs) fall short of the necessary performance threshold for Copilot+ PC compatibility. Recent developments suggest that the Arrow Lake Refresh generation will alter this narrative by introducing more powerful NPUs.

A recent report highlights that the upcoming Core Ultra series will feature the advanced NPU 4 architecture, adapted from Intel’s mobile processors known as Lunar Lake. This upgrade positions the new series as the inaugural desktop processors to support the Copilot+ PC initiative. For context, while AMD’s latest mobile chips also boast eligible NPUs, their desktop variants remain conventional, lacking the AI enhancements available in Windows 11.

Performance Enhancements: Gaming and AI Workloads

The Arrow Lake Refresh is anticipated not only to improve NPU performance but also to boost clock speeds, which is crucial for gaming experiences. The previous generation of Core Ultra 200 Series faced criticism for its gaming capabilities, particularly when compared to AMD’s X3D chips, which currently lead in this area. However, it’s important to note that Arrow Lake Refresh is likely to maintain the same number of processor and graphics cores, concentrating instead on enhancing AI processing and overall efficiency through higher clock speeds.

Intel’s Arrow Lake Refresh is expected to launch later this year while retaining the established LGA-1851 socket. This will pave the way for future innovations with the Nova Lake processors, set to introduce the new LGA-1954 socket.
