In a recent interview, Donnie Yen discussed how a significant alteration in the screenplay of his latest film, The Prosecutor, facilitated his reunion with a familiar face from the Ip Man franchise. Renowned for his roles as Chirrut Imwe in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Caine, the High Table assassin in John Wick: Chapter 4, Yen earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the legendary Wing Chun master, Ip Man. In The Prosecutor, he takes on the challenging role of a public prosecutor who exploits all possible avenues to defend his client.
During a conversation with Screen Rant, Yen revealed that a pivotal casting decision for The Prosecutor nearly didn’t happen due to its initial script. He disclosed that the original concept cast Kent Cheng’s character, Bao Ding, as a younger man, which didn’t align with the character’s depth. Yen recognized that by opting for an older actor, they could successfully delve into the character’s complexity, leading to a meaningful brotherhood on-screen. He elaborated on this choice:
Yes, absolutely. In the beginning, in the original script, it was a younger guy to play this kind of partnership, and I thought, “You know what, I want someone who’s been into that position for the longest time.”That character should be someone who’s 9-5, he doesn’t change, and he goes about just doing his job without really understanding what his job means to him. So I wanted that type of character for exchange, you know? I needed an older, experienced character like him.
