Sean “Diddy”Combs has enjoyed a long and influential career in the rap industry, launching his musical journey with the hit single “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down”back in 1996. Over nearly three decades, Diddy has been involved in numerous feuds, including a notable dispute with Kendrick Lamar that sparked in 2013.
The conflict between Kendrick Lamar and Diddy began shortly after the release of Big Sean’s track “Control,”which featured memorable verses from both Lamar and Jay Electronica.
In his striking verse on the track, Kendrick referred to himself as the “King of New York,”a declaration that ruffled feathers among many New York City rappers, including Diddy.
Diddy and Kendrick Lamar’s feud ignited over the track “Control”
Just a month after the release of Kendrick Lamar’s “Control,”Terence “Punch”Henderson, president of Top Dawg Entertainment, appeared on the R&B Money podcast on September 14. During the “I Ain’t Taking No Names”segment, he shared a humorous recollection involving Lamar:
“The homie just did this song, right? Pissed a gang of people off. Everybody was mad at it. When the song came out, he was overseas, then he came back to the States. The first place we stopped in was New York City and the first thing we do is say, ‘Let’s go to the club’ because we want to check the temperature, see what everybody was on—L.A. stuff.”
Although no names were mentioned directly, comparisons were drawn to an alleged confrontation involving Diddy, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar at the VMAs afterparty in New York.
Punch further described how Diddy confronted Kendrick about the controversial track, expressing his discontent. While Kendrick maintained there was no personal animosity, the discussion heated up, with J. Cole stepping in to defend Lamar, which escalated the situation and led to a scuffle at the club.
Punch recounted that Diddy threatened Lamar, saying:
“He was like, ‘If you ever say what you said to me earlier, ni**a, I’ll…’ And he grabbed a bottle from the table and he said, ‘What you gon’ do? Hit me on my head with a bottle?’ He was like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna break it on the table and I’m gonna cut your throat.’”
The incident grew more intense, with Punch recalling that their verbal exchange led to a physical confrontation, allegedly initiated by Cole.
J. Cole’s “Let Go Of My Hand”seemingly references his 2013 conflict with Diddy
In May 2021, J. Cole released his acclaimed sixth studio album, “The Off-Season,”which included the track “Let Go Of My Hand.”
In this song, Cole appears to reflect on the altercation he had with Diddy eight years prior. His lyrics detail the incident:
“I kept a tough demeanour on the surface but was mostly just pretendin’/ Luckily my bluff was workin’ way more often than not/ But sometimes a n***a pulled my card, tryna expose me for fraud/ And with my reputation at stake/ I was scufflin’ just to save face/ Couple wins, couple losses, some broken up too quick to call it.”
Cole’s album soared to the top of the Billboard 200 chart in 2021, garnering positive acclaim from both fans and critics alike.
However, three years later, when the “Satisfy You”rapper faced scrutiny over past allegations, the 2013 scuffle resurfaced in conversations on social media.
Both Diddy and Kendrick refuted claims of any physical confrontation on the platform X, asserting it was merely a rumor and reminiscing about how they had a great time back then.
