Diagonal Roads and Buildings in Anno 117: Revamping the Classic Grid Layout

Innovative Road Design Introduced in Anno 117

Since its launch, the Anno series has established its identity through a grid-based road system, limiting players to straight road segments with right-angle turns as they build their empires. However, the upcoming title, Anno 117: Pax Romana, promises to revolutionize this aspect with the introduction of diagonal roads.

New Features Unveiled

The developers at Ubisoft previously hinted at this exciting new feature, and they recently provided a comprehensive overview of how this will enhance gameplay. According to the team, the grid structure in Anno 117 has been reimagined, allowing for the placement of roads and buildings at 45-degree angles.

“In Anno 117: Pax Romana the grid is reworked with additional functionality to allow for 45° angles of roads and buildings, ”explains the developer.“This does help making both streets and anything connected to them look significantly more organic, and can certainly change up the look and feel of both building your cities and setting up your production chains.”

Transformative Road Design in Anno 117

Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal

One of the most notable improvements is the elimination of harsh corner angles seen in previous installments. The new design enables smoother connections between roads, resulting in more cohesive and visually appealing cityscapes. Unlike the jagged appearance of earlier diagonal roads, Anno 117 offers a more polished solution for players.

Flexible Building Options

Players will now have access to eight-directional road options alongside the traditional four-directional roads, allowing for more flexible and dynamic city planning. This addition will enable builders to create a more personalized urban layout tailored to their strategic vision.

“Despite these new options, our focus was to still make building roads as straightforward and simple as before, where a few clicks connect two points on the island no matter how they are orientated in the grid, ”the developer explains further.“Accordingly, all buildings also automatically align themselves to the placed roads next to them, no matter if they are built in 45° or 90°.You can still manually rotate them to your liking, of course.”
