Dexter: Original Sin Must Stand Alone and Not Just Set Up for a Sequel

Attention: This article contains spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1.

Key Highlights

  • Confirmation that the contemporary Dexter Morgan survived a gunshot wound to the chest.
  • The series Dexter: Original Sin sets the stage for a subsequent revival while presenting new and engaging storylines.
  • A successful launch could lead to a deeper exploration of Dexter’s history across multiple seasons.

Dexter: Original Sin debuted on Paramount+ in collaboration with Showtime this week, revealing that Dexter Morgan is indeed alive after sustaining a gunshot injury. The episode revisits a pivotal moment from 1991, highlighting young Dexter as he readies himself for his first kill before embarking on his journey as an intern with Miami Metro Homicide. This prequel has effectively set the groundwork for Michael C. Hall’s anticipated return in the sequel series, Resurrection, while simultaneously hinting at rich narratives yet to unfold regarding Dexter’s past.

As of now, there is no official word on whether the prequel series will receive a second season, especially considering that Dexter: Original Sin just had its premiere. It would be disappointing if the show serves merely as a precursor to the sequel without exploring its own storylines. Patrick Gibson skillfully embodies the nuances of a serial killer, and the ensemble cast shows immense potential. Fans are clearly hoping for a comprehensive and enduring series.

Shortly after the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, Paramount+ with Showtime released a teaser for the new sequel series, Resurrection, expected to premiere in summer 2025. The Dexter universe is expanding significantly after the success of the 2021 limited series, Dexter: New Blood, which became a blockbuster for Showtime. However, it remains uncertain whether the prequel series intends solely to lead into the sequel, particularly since Michael C. Hall appears to narrate his past as he recovers from his wound. Depending on how Dexter’s journey unfolds in Resurrection, the voiceover may cease in the prequel, potentially concluding the exploration of his origins in Original Sin.

This outcome would indeed be unfortunate as the inaugural episode of Original Sin sets the stage for an intriguing narrative. Michael C. Hall indicated in an interview with Variety that Resurrection could see multiple seasons, yet no clear signals exist regarding the future of Original Sin. Patrick Dempsey’s involvement also raises questions, as he has signed only for one season. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, he stated:

I’ve only signed on for one year, so who knows? I love being on the show, but you never know what could happen.

However, it is not uncommon for actors on new series to be given rolling one-year contracts, which doesn’t necessarily imply that Original Sin will conclude. Just because Dempsey may not remain past the first season does not indicate the show’s end.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips seems to have taken lessons from the challenges surrounding the closure of Dexter’s narrative. Following the mistaken demise of the character in New Blood, this sequel series is a response to the audience’s desire for more after becoming Showtime’s biggest hit. The revival of Dexter’s character came about post-Paramount’s merger with Showtime, which prompted the need for both a sequel and a prequel within the Dexter franchise. Phillips and his team diligently searched for ways to bring Dexter back to life, synergizing it with the prequel’s narrative.
