WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 8!
In the latest episode of Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin, the identity of the NHI Killer is unveiled—an exciting moment that corroborates a popular fan theory linking this killer back to a recognizable villain from the original series. Captain Aaron Spencer, while searching for the murderer of Jimmy Powell and the abductor of his son Nicky (who are revealed to be the same person), is also entangled in the investigation of several NHI-related deaths, which stand for “No Human Involved.”This term typically applies to marginalized individuals such as drug users, sex workers, and homeless people, a fact explained by Batista in episode 2.
Unmasking Brian Moser: The NHI Killer
Brian Moser: Dexter’s Biological Brother and the NHI Killer

It may have seemed unconventional for Original Sin to construct its initial major antagonist as a younger incarnation of an established character from Dexter. However, the plot comes full circle as viewers discover that this season’s serial killer is indeed the Ice Truck Killer, a.k.a. Brian Moser, Dexter’s biological brother, who has been lurking throughout the prequel’s timeline.

Within episode 8, LaGuerta and Harry sift through the psychiatrist’s records in Tampa, suspecting the NHI Killer may have been one of his patients. Harry uncovers a troubling file on Brian Moser, revealing his recent release from a psychiatric facility, marked by repeated incidents of disorderly conduct and violence. Connecting the dots, Harry realizes that Raul Martinez, one of the NHI Killer’s victims, was Brian’s nursing attendant at the hospital. This discovery indicates a chilling pattern—both of Laura’s sons have become killers.
Early Hints of Brian Moser’s Comeback
Foreshadowing the Ice Truck Killer’s Presence

Even before Brian Moser was definitively identified as the NHI Killer, Original Sin had cleverly hinted at his ominous return. Notably, in episode 2, a young man, reminiscent of Brian’s appearance and style, approaches Dexter at a restaurant. Although Dexter dismisses this encounter, it teases the potential of a reunion between the brothers in their early adulthood.
The sixth episode offers a more direct nod to the Ice Truck Killer when Dexter, while tailing Levi Reed, is momentarily separated by the sudden appearance of a refrigeration truck. This vehicle is identical in make and design to the one utilized by Brian in the original Dexter series, complete with matching identifying letters indicating “Miami Chills Ice.”Although it remains unclear whether Brian currently uses this truck, its appearance strongly suggests his looming presence in the storyline set in the early 1990s.
Harry’s Deceptive Silence on Brian Moser
The Motivation Behind Harry’s Concealment

Despite his newfound certainty about Brian Moser’s identity as the NHI Killer, Harry chooses to withhold this information from LaGuerta. Driven by guilt over the fate of Laura and his complex relationship with Dexter and Brian, Harry feels a heavy responsibility for Brian’s transformation into a killer. He realizes that he must take decisive action regarding Brian before Miami Metro catches wind of the truth.
This secrecy also stems from Harry’s fear that revealing Brian’s identity might unearth details of his past affair with Laura, as well as Dexter’s dark history preceding the Shipping Yard Massacre. Moreover, there’s a pressing risk that if Brian is exposed, it could threaten Dexter’s own concealed identity, leading to investigations that might unveil his past actions and the Code of Harry.
