Dexter: New Blood Revives the Overused Debra Morgan Trend from the Original Series

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 6.

The prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, crafted by Clyde Phillips, the mind behind Dexter: New Blood, reintroduces a well-known but overused trend from the original series: Deb’s unfortunate romantic choices. Following Dexter’s evolution as he embraces his “dark passenger,”under the mentorship of his adoptive father Harry, the show is set in the early ’90s Miami as Dexter navigates his career at Miami Metro PD. New episodes are released every Friday exclusively on Paramount+, except for a scheduled break on January 17, 2024.

In this series, Michael C. Hall reprises his iconic role, lending his voice to Dexter’s inner thoughts and serving as the narrator. As Dexter embarks on his quest to fulfill his violent inclinations while adhering to Harry’s code, another upcoming installment, Dexter: Resurrection, is set for a summer 2025 release, with Hall confirmed to return.

Original Sin Reinforces Dexter’s Pattern of Deb’s Poor Relationship Choices

Deb’s history with romantic partners in the original series is notably disastrous. From complex characters like Rudy Cooper, also known as The Ice Truck Killer, to the troubled relationships with Andrew Briggs and Sean the Mechanic—who revealed he was already married—Deb faces a string of tumultuous connections. Although Frank Lundy represented a healthier relationship, the age gap created significant tension among those close to her. In Original Sin, Gio introduces yet another cloud of red flags.

Deb’s most stable relationship was arguably her on-again, off-again romance with Joey Quinn, who was at her side during her tragic demise in the original series finale. Their relationship, while imperfect, was characterized by mutual understanding and could have led to a more stable partnership. Meanwhile, Deb’s unusual attraction to Dexter, which emerged later in the series, only serves to highlight her confusion surrounding love and connection. This reveals her struggles with navigating intimacy and commitment.

Considering Deb’s history of poor choices, it stands to reason that Gio might turn out to be a negative influence in the latter episodes of Dexter: Original Sin. There’s a possibility he could be tied to the kidnapping and murders surrounding Jimmy Powell and Aaron Spencer’s son, introducing a shocking twist to the narrative. Gio frequently brings up his wealthy father, hinting at unresolved issues that may contribute to the escalating drama. His father’s potential involvement in Jimmy Powell’s demise further complicates matters, suggesting that secrets will soon be revealed about Gio. As the season progresses, Deb may be faced with the heart-wrenching reality of losing Harry, anticipated to occur in the season finale.
