The ninth episode of The Challenge 40, titled “An Era of One,”made its debut on MTV on October 16. This installment highlighted the emerging tensions among the four eras and how these dynamics impacted contestant relationships, breeding feelings of paranoia and discomfort.
Following his exit in episode 9, Devin opened up about his tumultuous relationship with Johnny Bananas. He recounted an incident where Johnny allegedly attempted to manipulate him into believing that he intended to withdraw from the competition.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on October 16, Devin elaborated on the moment when Johnny reportedly tried to turn Michele against him, only to later deny any involvement. He commented:
“He [Johnny] took advantage of a friend [Michele] during a vulnerable moment to try to set her against me [Devin] because I was a threat in the game, which is pretty sad.”
The latest episode featured a challenge called “Bottoms Out,”where Rachel claimed the top spot, leaving Devin and Tori at the bottom. The champion selected Kyland and Kaycee to face off against the first-round losers in the Arena game.
In the “Cable Connection Showdown,”the contestants competed fiercely, with Kyland and Tori eventually triumphing, resulting in Devin and Kaycee’s elimination.
Devin from The Challenge 40 reveals motivations behind Johnny Bananas’ tactics
Earlier this season, viewers witnessed audio of Johnny conversing with Michele, expressing his concerns that Devin was merely using her as a strategic pawn. However, he later refuted having that discussion.
During his chat with Entertainment Weekly, Devin articulated his perspectives on Johnny’s attempts to “drive a wedge”between him and Michele.
Reflecting on Johnny’s actions observed by fans of The Challenge 40, Devin disclosed the reasoning behind them and a backstory the audience might not have known. He shared that at the toga party, Johnny confided in him that he could not remain on the show due to “a lot of personal issues.”Devin recounted:
“It’s an age-old tactic. I told him, ‘Johnny, you’re not being honest with me.’ He insisted, ‘No really, after three weeks, I have to find a way out.’ I replied, ‘If you’re still around after six weeks, I’ll help you leave.’”
Johnny continued on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras beyond week 4, failing to depart the show as he claimed he would. Devin, unfazed by Johnny’s unfulfilled promise, expressed readiness to confront any competitors in the finale.
Despite this, Johnny exploited Devin’s connection with Michele by leveraging her emotional vulnerability against her during the game. Detailing Johnny’s strategy to create rifts between them, Devin remarked:
“His approach involved convincing her that I am a total scoundrel, especially knowing the issues between Michele and Callum from season 39.”
Devin further elaborated:
“I understand how challenging that was for her, and for him to suggest that I’m doing the same, implying that she isn’t deserving of love or genuine affection, and that my interest is solely to enhance my position in the game, is truly despicable.”
Finding it “pretty sad”that Johnny chose to exploit Michele’s vulnerable position to undermine him, Devin challenged Johnny’s motives, questioning whether he would have even had that conversation if he didn’t see Devin as a competitor.
New episodes of The Challenge 40 are available every Wednesday on MTV.
