Development of Nintendo Switch 2 Started Before 2019; ‘Super Nintendo Switch’ Name Under Consideration

Nintendo Switch 2 Development Insights: An Exclusive Interview

In light of the recent launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its relatively high game pricing, Nintendo has refreshed its website with an in-depth developer interview. This conversation features key players from the Direct presentation: Producer Kouichi Kawamoto, Senior Director Takuhiro Dohta, and General Manager Tetsuya Sasaki. Notably, the team revealed that research and development for the Nintendo Switch 2 began even prior to 2019.

Early Foundations in Hardware Development

Kawamoto: “Our collaboration on the new hardware project officially began around 2019. However, I recall that R&D efforts were underway even before we kicked off the project.”

Sasaki: “Correct. We recognized that ongoing console innovation was essential post-Switch launch. Thus, we proactively started brainstorming ideas for our next console. Given that hardware development is a lengthy process, it was vital to commence early to ensure the timely readiness of the Software Development Kit (SDK) for concurrent software development. We initiated daily information-gathering activities on various technological advancements and their potential outcomes. In that respect, you could argue that our development began well before 2019.”

Naming Challenges and Nostalgic Considerations

Kawamoto: “We had countless naming ideas and faced many hurdles to arrive at the right one. One of the considerations was ‘Super Nintendo Switch’.However, it’s worth noting that while the Super NES succeeded the NES, it was incompatible with NES games. The Switch 2, on the other hand, is designed to be fully compatible with its predecessor’s games. Our intention is for players to focus on the experience rather than the hardware specifications, viewing it as the latest console from Nintendo. Hence, we believe ‘Nintendo Switch 2′ aptly signifies a new standard for the series.”

Inclusivity in Gaming Experience

Dohta: “Indeed. From the onset, we envisioned the Switch 2 as a console adaptable for diverse player demographics. This approach remains consistent from the original Switch to the new iteration. Our goal was to craft an enjoyable experience for a wide audience rather than catering solely to enthusiasts of high-performance systems. We aimed for a straightforward name that conveys to potential buyers that the Nintendo Switch 2 is the latest model. Although the naming process was fraught with challenges, after much deliberation, we collectively decided on Nintendo Switch 2.”

Enhanced Hardware Features

The interview also highlighted significant upgrades in the hardware specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2. The device now boasts a battery capacity that is 1.2 times greater than that of the original Switch, compensating for the higher energy demands of its advanced processor. Furthermore, the JoyCon 2 features improved HD Rumble 2 technology, facilitating a broader range of vibration feedback, stronger rumble sensations, and faster response times. Additionally, the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller presents an enhanced user experience with ‘smooth-gliding sticks’ and ergonomically designed ‘seamless grips’ that prioritize comfort in gameplay.

As developments continue within the gaming industry, the Nintendo Switch 2 appears poised to make a significant impact among both new and returning gamers. Stay tuned for more updates as we delve deeper into its features and capabilities.
