Developer Reveals Compact Windows 11 24H2 Edition That Runs from a DVD
Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled comprehensive feature information regarding Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, marking the long-term servicing channel (LTSC) variant of the new operating system.
The developer NTDEV, renowned for creating tiny11 and tiny10—streamlined, modified versions of Windows 11 and 10—has released an update for the tiny11 project. The latest iteration now includes Windows 11 version 24H2, developed using the Windows 11 LTSC 2024 framework.
NTDEV proudly emphasizes the remarkably compact size of the new tiny11 24H2, which can even fit on a DVD due to its light footprint of merely 3.54 GB. This leaves ample capacity for additional files, considering that a standard DVD can accommodate close to 4.7 GB.
This achievement is largely attributed to the use of LZX delta compression. To clarify, LZX, or Lempel-Ziv Extended compression, is an engine based on the LZ77 compression algorithm, widely utilized for NTFS file compression. The NTFS (New Technology File System) remains the primary system for Windows, managing various essential system files.
While Microsoft has introduced enhancements to the Resilient File System (ReFS) in its latest updates, these improvements are primarily aimed at professional users rather than the general consumer market.
The good news is that the entire tiny11 can still be stored on a DVD! (thanks to LZX compression). Check out tiny11 based on Windows 11 LTSC 24H2! pic.twitter.com/tXS3Z8KoSw

In addition to its minimal storage requirements, the tiny11 creator frequently mentions the low memory usage of their build. They have demonstrated the operating system functioning with as little as 176 MB of RAM, and in an even more impressive feat, a “text-only”variant of Windows 11 was shown to run with a mere 100 MB of RAM (YouTube link), effectively removing all graphical user interface elements.
