At the recent Shanghai Auto Show, Intel unveiled its next-generation System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures, dubbed Frisco Lake and Grizzly Lake. These innovations leverage the Panther Lake and Nova Lake intellectual properties (IPs) to bolster their automotive technology sector.

Intel Accelerates Automotive SoC Development with Frisco Lake

Intel has revealed ambitious plans for its automotive technology, committing to an advanced line of SoCs that integrate the company’s most cutting-edge architectures. Among these is the second-generation Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) SoC, codenamed Frisco Lake, which is set to define future automotive computing standards.

The Frisco Lake series is anticipated to employ a CPU architecture reflecting the forthcoming Panther Lake chips, slated for volume production in the first half of 2026. While the precise core counts have yet to be confirmed, these chips promise thermal design power (TDP) ratings between 20 and 65 watts, along with a remarkable tenfold increase in AI performance and a 61% boost in efficiency compared to the previous generation. This earlier generation was built on the Raptor Lake architecture, featuring a total of 12 cores optimized for energy efficiency within the range of 12 to 45 watts.

A significant enhancement is the introduction of the 3rd Generation Xe architecture, known as Xe3, which will succeed the existing Battlemage design. This new IP will provide substantial improvements over the first-generation Xe architecture, which included 96 Execution Units (EUs).Additional features of the Frisco Lake include support for 12 camera channels and 280 audio channels.

Moreover, industry analyst Harukaze5719 verified through kernel patches that the Frisco Lake SoC will leverage the Panther Lake IP, reinforcing its position as a leading-edge solution in automotive technology.

Future Insights on Intel’s Grizzly Lake and Monument Peak Platforms

Looking ahead, Intel is on track to introduce the Grizzly Lake platform, recognized as the third-generation SDV architecture, featuring processors codenamed Monument Peak. These SoCs are expected to harness the Nova Lake IP, potentially integrating up to 32 E-cores. The anticipated Nova Lake CPU architecture may accommodate as many as 52 cores, including a mix of P-cores and LP-cores.

Additional highlighted specifications for these innovative chips include an integrated Xe GPU capable of delivering up to 7 TFLOPs of compute power, support for six display pipelines, and up to 12 camera interfaces, alongside ASIL B and AEC-Q100 Grade 2 compliance.
