Combat Mechanics Explored in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Last month, Ubisoft unveiled exciting insights into the stealth mechanics of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Today, the spotlight has shifted to the game’s combat system, showcasing the unique fighting styles of the two main characters, Naoe and Yasuke, alongside the diverse range of enemy types and weaponry available.

Dynamic Combat Features

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, both protagonists exhibit a blend of light and heavy attacks, complemented by special posture attacks. These posture attacks require players to sustain their input to charge either a light or heavy strike, delivering increased damage at the cost of vulnerability during the charge-up phase. On the defensive front, Naoe and Yasuke can dodge, parry, and block incoming attacks, adding depth to their combat strategies.

“Active abilities are by far the most powerful skills to acquire,” remarks game director Charles. “They look cool, they hit hard, and they all offer additional opportunities like gap-closing, armor-breaking – even health regeneration.”

Distinct Fighting Styles

The combat repertoire of Naoe and Yasuke is notably different due to their backgrounds. Naoe’s shinobi training allows her to adeptly handle small groups and individual foes, excelling in swift takedowns but struggling in prolonged confrontations. Conversely, Yasuke’s samurai discipline equips him for extended battles, enabling him to chain together long combos with ease.

“Yasuke has a few unique samurai tricks up his sleeves,” adds Charles. “One of them is the Sheathed Posture Attack, where he will charge-up an opening attack while his katana is still in its sheath.”

Weapon Variety

When it comes to weaponry, Naoe has access to the iconic Assassin’s Hidden Blade, a Katana, and the versatile Kusarigama. In contrast, Yasuke wields a Long Katana, along with heavy weapons such as the Naginata and Kanabo. Additionally, players can utilize ranged attacks with Yasuke’s Yumi Bow or Teppo Rifle for tactical advantages during combat.

Enemy Types and Combat Tactics

The game also introduces a variety of enemies ranging from poorly trained conscripts to skilled Samurai fighters possessing unique combat styles. These foes utilize distinctive weaponry, with visible indicators such as glowing attacks signaling flurries or unstoppable moves, allowing players to strategize their blocking or evasive maneuvers based on their skills and unlocked abilities.

Strategically, enemy fighting styles fluctuate depending on whether they are alone or supported by allies. Charles comments, “Generally, the more enemies involved in a fight, the less defensive action each performs, relying on numbers to overwhelm players. However, in one-on-one duels against highly skilled combatants, expect a plethora of defensive maneuvers that will challenge players to diversify their attacks and employ the skills they’ve acquired.”

Release Information
