In the world of Destiny 2, Exotic Missions have typically been unveiled during the third Act. However, the recent expansion, Heresy, has defied expectations by releasing its Exotic weapon much earlier than usual.
Echoes and Revenant introduced Choir of One and Slayer’s Fang, respectively, while this expansion introduces Barrow-Dyad, a uniquely designed Strand Exotic SMG linked to the new “Derealize” Exotic mission. This weapon can be further customized and crafted, adding a layer of personal preference for players.
Bungie officially launched the Exotic quest chain during the second week of Heresy, following an initial tease from their developer livestream over two weeks before.
Characterized by a distinctive look reminiscent of a frisbee, Barrow-Dyad boasts an intrinsic perk that unleashes a powerful barrage of blight projectiles after charging its meter. Unlike previous Exotic quests that typically involve receiving a quest from a vendor, acquiring Barrow-Dyad necessitates an element of exploration—a nostalgic nod to quests from The Taken King, where players had to navigate the Dreadnaught in search of the Touch of Malice.
How to Begin the Barrow-Dyad Exotic Quest

Before diving into the Exotic quest, players must first locate it. The initial step involves finding a Taken Blight hidden within one of three designated regions. A popular location is the Hall of Souls, situated near the Court of Oryx.
To facilitate your search, load into a private session of the Nether activity. This offers the advantage of progressing at your own pace. You may not spawn in the Hall of Souls immediately; persistently reloading the activity can save you time.

Upon reaching the right location, identify an orange-tinted chamber filled with Grims and a Tormentor miniboss. You can choose to either engage them or simply bypass the encounter.
Utilize your Ghost to reveal invisible platforms that appear as you approach. Jump onto these platforms, and the Blight’s gravitational force will draw you in.
Inside the pocket dimension you enter, you’ll find a portal, a small plate, and an enigmatic panel behind a green forcefield.Do not jump into the portal, or you’ll be ejected back into reality. Instead, step onto the plate to activate the panel.
A dialogue box will indicate, “Something whispers to the right.”This message instructs you to move to the right off the platform. Remember this mechanic as it will be key for later stages and throughout the “Derealize”Exotic mission.
Successfully navigating this mini-puzzle rewards you with an Osseous Fragment, advancing your quest progression.

With this achievement, you’ll unlock “The Taken Path”quest, available by visiting Eris’s apartment.
The “Taken Path”Quest

“The Taken Path”is a concise quest that should take no more than a few hours, including the Derealize mission. This quest spans several locations, including the Moon, Cosmodrome, and back to the Nether, culminating in the exotic mission.
Upon completion of “The Taken Path, ”you will receive the Barrow-Dyad Exotic SMG (obtained during the mission), which will be required to complete several subsequent runs for Intrinsic perks and Catalysts.

To proceed, you should activate the Scotopic Rune within the “Runic Enhancement”tab, costing around 100 Sigil Shards to proceed with further steps.
Secret Location of Sorrow’s Harbor
The quest implies a secret waiting to be uncovered in Sorrow’s Harbor on the Moon. Contrary to popular opinion, this location is not hidden at the Altar of Sorrows, yet.
Your target area is the K1 Revelations Lost Sector. Following the normal path, you should encounter a small Taken Blight hovering above a dome. Upon eliminating this Blight, step on the plate and adhere to the dialogue prompts.
This action will transport you into an altered reality where the Lost Sector becomes encapsulated in Taken energy. Clear out the adversaries and defeat the Taken Ogre boss to earn an Osseous Fragment.
Secret Location of Forgotten Shore
Another Osseous Fragment can be found in the Forgotten Shore area in the Cosmodrome. There is no direct landing zone here; your nearest option is the Steppes, from where you’ll need to navigate through a valley.
Within the Lost Sector Veles Labyrinth, you will seek the Taken Orb again. After activating the plate puzzle a couple of more times and reaching the end of the Lost Sector, one might start questioning why nothing is progressing. You must backtrack to locate Taken foes to defeat.
Ultimately, you will confront a Taken Phalanx boss, eliminating it to receive your subsequent Osseous Fragment, leading you to the following step.
Understanding Taken Curses

To access the Derealize Exotic mission, you must first gather three additional Osseous Fragments, each associated with mini-quests known as Curses.
Each curse sends you into an activity where you will battle enemies armed with a Taken Relic. Achieving sufficient kills will charge the relic, allowing you to deposit it to fulfill the mini-quest.
After completing these tasks, return to the Dreadnaught to locate your Fragment. Prioritize finishing the initial steps of each quest before venturing back into the Nether.
Curse of Endurance
The Taken Relic can be found at the base of the first staircase in Sorrow’s Harbor. Utilize this Taken power to deal damage to your foes until the relic reaches its charge capacity.
A message will appear indicating it “grows heavy with power.”You then have to return to the original location to deposit it.
Your basic attacks release Taken blasts, while your Super ability unleashes a slow-moving Taken blight that delivers devastating damage.
Curse of Urgency
In the case of the Curse of Urgency, land at The Sludge in the EDZ and enter the Hallowed Grove Lost Sector.
Acquire the Taken Relic, but be prepared; you will face a ticking timer to clear the area before it reaches zero. Eliminating enemies will extend your time, so make every kill count.
Curse of Revenge
Finally, there’s the Curse of Revenge, where players must battle Taniks yet again. This mission takes players through the Nightmare Hunt: Pride located on the Moon.
The endeavor guides you through the Fallen Ketch, where eliminating foes shouldn’t be an issue, especially since you will be teamed with other players.
Complete the mission, defeat Taniks, and advance to the next stage.
Collecting Nether Osseous Fragments
Upon completing the initial step of each curse, the next order of business is finding the corresponding Osseous Fragments in the Nether.Enter a private session of The Nether to proceed at your own pace.
Osseous Fragments can be located by activating a hidden Hive statue within patrol areas.
Interacting with the statue will prompt you to “call to power, ”which spawns a “Hunter of Power”miniboss in the vicinity. Defeating this miniboss allows a second interaction with the statue, granting you the fragment.
Here are the locations based on my personal experience. Your runs may differ, but for convenience, reloading the activity until you land at your preferred location is recommended. I found two statues in the Nether; however, others may exist in different patrol zones.
Hall of Souls
If you spawn in the Hall of Souls, look for the statue to the immediate right of your spawn point. Activating it will summon either a Taken Wizard or Dread Psion. Once you defeat the miniboss, the fragment will appear on the statue.
Mausoleum
Upon entering the Mausoleum, head right into the pit surrounded by giant tentacles.
There, you will discover the statue behind a tentacle. Interact with it, kill the Taken Wizard, and the fragment will appear on the statue.
Final Step: Complete the Exotic Mission “Derealize”

With all steps completed, the concluding task is to undertake the “Derealize”Exotic mission. This can be accessed from a node located in the Last City, situated directly beneath the Nether mission node.
Successfully unlocking Barrow-Dyad will enable further customization options for the weapon at the Enclave in Savathun’s Throne World. Additional crafting options are anticipated to emerge as secrets and Expert clears unfold.
As of now, the catalysts for Barrow-Dyad are time-gated, with potential unlocks expected as the Episode progresses.
Lastly, as you explore the Nether, you may discover more Osseous Fragments to collect. These will help unlock quest steps needed to enhance your Exotic weapon’s Intrinsic perk.
