As of the weekly reset on April 29th, 2025, in Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy, a new triumph has emerged, inviting players to engage in the intriguing “En Passant”challenge. This triumph tasks participants with solving 27 intricate chess puzzles set within the captivating Unknown Space, adding an exciting layer of strategy and intellect to the gameplay.
For players looking to conquer these chess challenges, a comprehensive guide is available through the link below. While you can find puzzle pieces scattered throughout the game world, it’s noteworthy that a significant number—33 pieces—are specifically located within the Nether. To maximize your efficiency, consider entering a Private match in the Nether, allowing you to meticulously collect the easier pieces before tackling the more elusive ones.
The En Passant puzzles demand a keen intellect, especially as they are designed to stump even seasoned players unfamiliar with chess.Unlike many games, Destiny 2 offers minimal guidance, providing only vague hints to assist players in their quest for solutions.
Personally, my chess skills are not the best, and I owe my success in solving these challenges to the vibrant Destiny 2 community and content creators like Esoterickk on YouTube. This collaborative effort is ongoing, with updates anticipated as new strategies are discovered.
Accessing the Puzzles

Like many triumphs within the game, completing En Passant involves multiple stages reflecting your overall progress. If you’ve successfully uncovered all 60 of the chess pieces, your next step is to visit Eris Morn’s apartment located in The Last City on your Director map.

Upon entering the apartment, navigate through the glowing green rift that transports you to Eris’s throne world, known as the High Heresy. From your spawn point, face Eris directly, then turn 90 degrees to your right to peer over the platform’s edge.
Below, a hidden chamber awaits, beckoning you to jump down.
Within this room, you’ll discover a chessboard positioned on a table. Approaching it will prompt “Pick up the King?”Selecting this option sends you to the Unknown Antechamber, placing you on the chessboard itself.
Understanding the Gameplay Mechanics

Your adventure begins on a standard 8×8 chessboard, with coordinates marked from A-H (left to right) and 1-8 (bottom to top). For example, the lower-left space is designated A1, while the upper-right is labeled H8.
Surrounding the board are various plates displaying chess symbols. Stepping on these plates will clearly show you the amount of actions available for each piece in the buff/debuff section of your HUD.
- Chess Pieces: You can use the Knight, Rook, Pawn, Queen, and Bishop by stepping on their respective plates. Shooting a tile will place the selected piece there, reducing your available actions for that piece.
- Delete: Shooting a piece on the board, no matter its color, will remove it.
- Take: Shooting an existing black piece will replace it with a white one.
- Reset: An open book icon allows you to reset the entire board if needed.
- Undo: A claw-like panel enables you to reverse your last move.
Solutions to the Chess Puzzles

To resolve the puzzles effectively, you’ll need to utilize all 60 chess pieces collected during your exploration.Every puzzle demands the entire set of pieces to be solved.
Each of the 27 puzzles presents a unique challenge, seamlessly transitioning in difficulty as you progress. Completing a puzzle will result in an “Absolute pin”message, rewarding you with Glimmer, a chance to obtain a god roll weapon, and lore cards.

Reaching the Endgame of the Puzzles

Upon completing all 27 puzzles, the chessboard undergoes a remarkable transformation: braziers ignite with green flames, and a bowl of water replaces the Take plate. At this stage, you gain the ability to place an unlimited number of pieces across the board.
Welcome to the Endgame. Interacting with the bowl provides a bird’s-eye view of the chessboard, along with a frequency output. The previously used undo mechanism now offers the option to “Offer Your Answer.”
The significance of these frequency codes remains a mystery, but dedicated chess lovers within the Destiny community are expected to decipher it in due time. Observers have noted that each frequency could contribute to a larger image, potentially linked to future events slated for May 6th, 2025, such as the Edge of Fate reveal and the Rite of Nine.
There’s no need to re-solve the 27 puzzles again to access the Endgame. Simply exit your instance and return by selecting “Unknown Antechamber”in The Last City Destination on your Director, then opt for “Endgame.”If you’d like to revisit the puzzles, you can choose “Middlegame.”
Currently, players are encouraged to compile their frequency data and share insights with the community. The Destiny subreddit is a great platform for collaboration in figuring out the larger image that the frequencies may represent. Players can also submit their findings via a dedicated website.
There are reportedly 4096 potential frequencies, each corresponding to tiles on a 64×64 grid. For further collaboration and discussions, consider visiting r/raidsecrets or r/DestinyTheGame.
