Destiny 2 has made a dramatic entrance into its final episode by eliminating one of its most cherished and iconic characters. The game has experienced a tumultuous year in 2024, starting with the highly-praised The Final Shape DLC, which is often hailed as the franchise’s pinnacle expansion. However, this anticipation was quickly tempered by two subsequent episodes that aimed to resolve lingering plot threads but ended up disappointing many fans, leading to the lowest player engagement in the game’s history.
The third and concluding episode, titled Heresy, aspires to revitalize the game’s narrative thread. Players were eagerly awaiting this release, and it features the highly anticipated return of the Dreadnought location alongside the formidable foe, Oryx. Given that the Hive faction has consistently captured players’ imaginations, many are intrigued to see how they adapt to a universe devoid of the Witness’s influence.
A Major Character Departure: Eris Morn
The Significance of the Loss

Following the mission, players are treated to a compelling cutscene where Eris Morn awakens in an unknown realm, laughing enigmatically. This revelation leaves fans pondering two interpretations: firstly, having recently ascended to a Hive God, she may exist in her Throne World, unaffected by conventional death. Alternatively, her demise could signify the closure she has long sought since her harrowing experiences in Crota’s pit.
Challenges Faced by Destiny 2’s Episodes
The Content Struggle

Despite a solid foundation story-wise, the episodes have been met with lukewarm receptions, attributed mainly to a lack of engaging content. The preceding episodes were criticized for minimal multiplayer opportunities and disappointing rewards, causing a decline in player involvement. Additionally, Destiny 2 has struggled with crucial decision-making processes; for instance, crafting has shifted from a beneficial tool for casual players to a point of contention. The initial complaints regarding a deficient loot chase led Bungie to restrict the pool of craftable weapons, yet this resulted in its opposite effect, diminishing player satisfaction.
Where Heresy Is Taking Destiny 2
Exploring New Horizons

According to the latest roadmap, Destiny 2 will undergo significant shifts in its content structure. From now on, players can expect two major expansions annually, with each expansion designed to rival the scale of the celebrated Rise of Iron. These expansions will also feature two complimentary mini-updates, inspired by community feedback during The Final Shape‘s delay.
It seems that Bungie thrives under pressure, as evidenced by the considerable transformation occurring within Destiny 2. With increasing demands for a sequel and the studio’s pivot towards Marathon, Destiny’s future appeared uncertain. However, the narrative choices made in Heresy, including the pivotal fate of a beloved character, indicate a promising evolution for the franchise.
