Despite introducing significant upgrades in terms of design, performance, and camera hardware, Apple’s launch of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models in September of last year did not result in success in China. The standard models included the exclusive Dynamic Island feature, previously only available on the iPhone 14 Pro models. However, there was a 33 percent decline in sales last month compared to the previous year for the iPhone 15 in China.
The Struggles of the iPhone 15 in the Chinese Market Despite Upgrades
Despite a decline in iPhone shipments by 33 percent in China, as reported by China’s Academy of Information and Communications Technology (Bloomberg), the iPhone 15 still offers worthwhile upgrades compared to its predecessor. Apple has incorporated several new variations, including a curved back design reminiscent of the ‘Pro’ models, and the addition of the Dynamic Island feature, making it a more attractive choice for some. However, the iPhone 15 Pro models stand out with their improved design and significant enhancements in the camera department.
According to the report, approximately 2.4 million smartphones were shipped by foreign brands last month, with Apple dominating the market share due to the lack of major competitors. This is not a new trend for Apple, as the company has experienced a decrease in iPhone shipments for the third consecutive month. In December of last year, despite the company’s promotional efforts and incentives, iPhone shipments fell by 30 percent.
Despite facing stiff competition from Android manufacturers in the Chinese market, Apple has been struggling to maintain a strong presence in the region. As we have previously reported, resellers in China heavily rely on discounts for the iPhone 15, and Apple has even introduced rare price reductions on its website. However, in addition to competition, low shipments can also be attributed to a government-imposed ban on the iPhone by China last year, affecting sales from both the government and state companies. This has significantly hindered the potential sales of Apple devices in the country.
As previously stated, Huawei’s Mate 60 lineup poses strong competition in the region, as it was released before the iPhone 15. In an effort to boost sales, Tim Cook made a recent visit to China to promote the opening of a new App Store. We will provide additional information on Apple’s shipments in China once it becomes available.
