A user will soon receive a complimentary Wireview Pro 2 device for their ROG Astral RTX 5090, following an unfortunate incident where the original Wireview Pro connector melted due to an overlooked temperature warning.

Recently, we highlighted a case involving a user who experienced a melted Wireview Pro connector, attributed to elevated temperatures. This individual had modified his ROG Astral RTX 5090 by performing a shunt mod and flashing the MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z 1000W BIOS to raise the GPU’s power limit. As a result, the Wireview Pro alerted him to high temperature warnings, which he chose to disregard, leading to the melting of the connector and damage to his cable.
Despite the mishap, the user’s GPU and power supply unit (PSU) remained intact. However, the absence of the Wireview Pro device complicates the ability to monitor critical metrics such as power consumption and temperature. In a show of support, prominent German overclocker Der8auer has reached out to the user, requesting shipping details to send a replacement. Known for his thorough examinations of the 16-pin connector melting dilemma, Der8auer expressed admiration for the user’s dedication to pushing performance limits, even while ignoring the potential risks indicated by the temperature warnings.
The upgraded Wireview Pro 2 offers enhanced functionality compared to its predecessor, providing superior protection against connector failures. Featuring an active cooling fan and advanced safety features, the Wireview Pro 2 includes an automatic shutdown system that activates when power thresholds are breached. Priced around $140, its cost reflects the additional capabilities over the original Wireview Pro.
Fortunately, the original user did not sustain significant damage and can easily transition to the Wireview Pro 2, which offers vital safeguards against similar incidents in the future. Nonetheless, it is essential to understand that pushing the GPU beyond its limits may still pose risks, and while the Wireview Pro 2 significantly reduces the likelihood of connector melting, it does not provide complete immunity.
