Denver Police Department Initiates AirTag Distribution to Combat Car Theft

Numerous accounts have highlighted the effectiveness of Apple AirTags in tracking down lost and stolen possessions. While these devices are not specifically engineered to deter theft, they have shown considerable success in recovery situations. Recognizing this potential, the Denver Police Department is launching an initiative to distribute free Apple AirTags and Samsung trackers to help residents safeguard their vehicles against theft.

Collaboration with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority

This week, the Denver Police Department announced its partnership with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) to enhance vehicle security. As part of this collaboration, 450 Apple AirTags and Samsung SmartThings Trackers will be provided free of charge to Denver residents.

According to a statement from the Denver Police Department, as reported by Gizmodo:

With the goal of preventing auto thefts in Denver and quickly locating stolen vehicles and suspects, the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) is partnering with the Denver Police Department (DPD) to provide a limited number of free AirTag or SmartTag Bluetooth location tracking devices to Denver residents who register for the DenverTrack auto theft prevention program during this promotional event.

How the Program Works

It’s important to note that the Denver Police will not have direct access to the locations of the distributed AirTags or Samsung trackers. Residents will have the discretion to share their tracking information with law enforcement. However, by enrolling in the program, they allow the police to utilize GPS data when a report of theft is filed, aiding in the recovery process.

Eligibility and Registration Details

Residents interested in obtaining a free Apple AirTag or Samsung tracker must register through the Auto Theft Prevention section of the Denver government website. Vehicle owners are required to book an appointment and bring their vehicle to one of six district stations between March 19 and March 21. Participants should also bring the smartphone they intend to use for tracking.

If an owner is unable to attend and secure a tracker, they will still receive a DenverTrack Decal via USPS. This decal serves as a visual warning to potential thieves that the vehicle is equipped with tracking capabilities.

Decal Placement Instructions

Vehicle owners should place the decal on the lower portion of their vehicle as a means to deter thieves by indicating that the vehicle is registered with the DenverTrack program and is trackable if stolen.
