Having had the opportunity to play a demo of Demonschool prior to its public unveiling, I found the experience significantly enjoyable, even if the gameplay showcased didn’t completely reflect the rich variety teased in the latest preview. The combat system particularly captivated me, alongside its unique artistic aesthetics, setting it apart from other recent titles in the genre.

Combat Mechanics: A Unique Challenge

What distinguishes the Demonschool combat system is its intriguing and distinctive mechanics. For instance, characters are restricted to linear movements and can use a special maneuver called Sidestep, which allows them to re-position without depleting Action Points (AP).This requires strategic placement of characters to effectively attack enemies, as each assault not only damages opponents but also pushes them, creating opportunities for preemptive strikes during the Planning Phase.

However, mere enemy defeat isn’t sufficient for victory. Players must also seal a portal by navigating a character to the opposite side of the combat arena while eliminating a required number of demons. The unique blend of character roles, continuous demon respawns, and the diverse properties of special attacks contributes to a battle system that’s intricately strategic. This set-up not only presents a steep learning curve but also rewards players with exhilarating and thoughtful encounters.
