Recently, the remake of Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5 has received a significant update that introduces support for the console’s Power Saver Mode. This enhancement not only optimizes performance and resolution but also reduces system power consumption. Such adjustments could hint at the capabilities of the much-speculated PlayStation handheld device, which is rumored to be able to run PS5 titles effectively.
Originally developed by Bluepoint Games and released alongside the PS5 in November 2020, the remake now features a small leaf icon on the main menu, indicating its compatibility with the new Power Saver Mode. This development is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) broader environmental initiative, known as the “Road to Zero”, which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Performance Enhancements with Power Saver Mode in Demon’s Souls
While the introduction of Power Saver Mode is part of a larger commitment to environmental sustainability, it raises speculation about the potential capabilities of the upcoming PlayStation handheld, which may also support PS5 games. The adjustments in performance and resolution that accompany this mode lend some credence to these rumors.
Recent tests indicate that the resolution in Power Saver Mode is noticeably lower than that in both the Performance and Cinematic display settings. This is evidenced by a collection of screenshots taken directly from my PS5 during gameplay.

Additionally, the frame rate in Power Saver Mode has been adjusted from 60 FPS in Performance Mode down to 30 FPS. An insightful video shared on YouTube illustrates the gameplay experience under these settings, revealing that while 30 FPS may not be ideal for console gaming, it could be acceptable for a handheld device.

Reduced Energy Consumption in Demon’s Souls Remake
One of the most remarkable aspects of Power Saver Mode is its ability to significantly reduce energy consumption. For instance, a test conducted by a member of the ResetERA forums, known as vicegold, revealed that power usage dropped from approximately 224 W in standard mode to around 98 W in Power Saver Mode. This substantial difference highlights the effectiveness of the updates.
While the power consumption for the PS5 remains relatively high for a handheld gaming system, the fact that such reductions can occur with minimal degradation in gameplay quality suggests promising potential for the forthcoming handheld device. Just as Demon’s Souls has adapted, it’s likely the upcoming games will need similar fine-tuning to ensure an optimal experience on portable platforms.
Furthermore, Demon’s Souls is just one of many PS5 games set to receive updates for Power Saver Mode. Other titles, including Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, are also expected to support this feature, marking another exciting opportunity for gamers to examine the power and performance balance on the console.
