In the battle against formidable demons, Demon Slayers heavily rely on Breathing Techniques as their source of power. However, it’s important to note that demons do not need to develop Breathing Techniques; they draw upon an intrinsic ability known as Blood Demon Art.
Every demon emerges from the blood of Muzan Kibutsuji, and by consuming human flesh, they gain strength and can unlock various supernatural capabilities. Similar to Breathing Techniques, Blood Demon Art empowers demons with diverse abilities and offensive techniques that evolve according to their individual power levels and proficiency.

The Breathing Concept for Demons

Demons are capable of breath, but their survival does not hinge upon it. They possess the ability to regenerate through Blood Demon Art, making the principles of Breathing Techniques inapplicable to them. Instead of controlling their breathing like Demon Slayers, they invoke their demonic blood to heal wounds, regenerate limbs, and unleash powerful attacks. Unlike humans, demons are not bound by the need to breathe, eat, or sleep, except for their requirement to consume humans to sustain their existence. Thus, Breathing Techniques serve little purpose in their combat.
You misunderstand, Tanjiro. I only despise the weak. I only spit on weaklings. Yes. Weaklings make me sick. It is the law of nature that they be weeded out.– Akaza
Upper Moon demons wield Blood Demon Art that rivals the capabilities of the Hashira’s Breathing Techniques. This parity allows both groups to engage each other effectively in combat. Awash with Muzan’s blood, demons can manipulate their forms and even control elemental forces, granting them a significant competitive edge. Claiming that demons depend on breathing is misleading. They are averse to the scent of wisteria, which is toxic to them regardless of their regenerative abilities. Furthermore, certain demons can continue fighting even after decapitation, illustrating their non-reliance on breathing.
The Exceptions: Kokushibo and Kaigaku
Moon and Thunder Breathing Legacy

Among demons, the Upper Moon 1 demon, Kokushibo, and the Upper Moon 6 demon, Kaigaku, are notable exceptions, as they still utilize Breathing Techniques after their transformation into demons. Once esteemed demon slayers, Kokushibo and Kaigaku retained their connection to their respective techniques—Moon Breathing and Thunder Breathing. However, the application of their Breathing Techniques post-transformation challenges conventional notions of what these techniques represent. They seem to have transitioned from oxygen dependence to enhancing their combat style through Blood Demon Art.

These instances further reinforce the understanding that, even though Kokushibo and Kaigaku wield Breathing Techniques, their reliance on it has diminished post-transformation. Demons inherently draw from Blood Demon Art, which enhances their attacks significantly. In contrast to Demon Slayers, who exhibit fatigue and heavy breathing in battle, demons display remarkable stamina and resilience. This shift indicates that they have transcended the basic biological need to breathe and are ultimately empowered by their Blood Demon Art, enabling them to surpass their former human limitations.
