In the universe of Demon Slayer, Breathing Styles represent the core techniques utilized by swordsmen. These varied styles cater to different combat methods and physical attributes. While most formidable characters, including the Hashiras, typically excel in a single Breathing Style, Tanjiro stands out by employing two distinct styles. But what motivates this unique approach?
Initially, Tanjiro trained in the Water Breathing technique. As the narrative unfolded, he also uncovered the profound Sun Breathing method. His ability to utilize both styles strategically raises the question: Does wielding dual Breathing Styles provide Tanjiro with an enhancement in strength or create potential disadvantages?
Insight into Breathing Styles

Breathing Styles are fundamental for Demon Slayers, enabling them to enhance their agility, techniques, and fighting strength. Notably, Sun Breathing, the original and most powerful Breathing Style, was innovated by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, regarded as the strongest Demon Slayer. This foundational style has influenced the creation of all subsequent Breathing Styles.
Among these styles, the five principal variations include:
- Water Breathing: A fluid and adaptable style suited for different foes.
- Flame Breathing: Characterized by intense strikes that incinerate adversaries.
- Wind Breathing: Powerful yet swift attacks that manipulate air to produce slashing winds.
- Stone Breathing: A balanced approach combining offensive and defensive tactics with unconventional weapons.
- Thunder Breathing: Features rapid strikes through a quick-draw technique relying on agile footwork.
While these five styles are prevalent among Demon Slayers, some have adapted and innovated to create personalized forms that better suit their combat styles. For example, Hashiras like Tokito and Shinobu devised unique styles—Mist Breathing for stealth and Insect Breathing for rapid offensive maneuvers, respectively.
Tanjiro’s Journey to Mastering Two Breathing Styles
Water Breathing

In the series premiere, Tanjiro meets Giyu, the Water Hashira, leading him to be trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, the previous Water Hashira. This foundation in Water Breathing, the most common style within the series, equipped Tanjiro with the versatility required to confront diverse enemies. He successfully took down powerful demons like Kyogai while also demonstrating compassion toward individuals such as the Spider Mother.
Sun Breathing

During a pivotal encounter in Episode 19 against Rui, Tanjiro taps into a buried memory of his father’s traditional kagura dance—something that allowed his father to perform despite frailty. This remembrance enabled Tanjiro to channel the Hinokami Kagura, a technique later revealed to be Sun Breathing. Unfortunately, the knowledge of its power waned over time, mostly preserved within the Kamado lineage.
The Rationale Behind Dual Breathing Styles
Strength Limitations

Initially, the Hinokami Kagura was intended as a ceremonial dance, not a combat style, which constrained Tanjiro’s application of its power. Water Breathing allowed him to defeat numerous foes effectively, but as increasingly formidable opponents emerged, he found himself drawn back to the Hinokami Kagura’s capabilities. Tanjiro’s body naturally adapted to the Sun Breathing style, enhancing his strength and speed; however, his inexperience with it meant that relying solely on this technique taxed his body significantly.
Integrating Both Techniques

As he continued to strengthen his prowess, Tanjiro became capable of regularly utilizing Sun Breathing. While engaged in battles against formidable foes, such as Gyutaro and Daki, he showcased various forms of the Sun Breathing technique. However, extended combat periods limited his ability to use it to its full potential. Consequently, by combining the two styles, he devised an approach that retained speed and power while minimizing physical strain.
“Blend the breathing techniques! Use Water Breathing and the Hinokami Kagura in combination! That’ll give me more attack power than I’d have with just Water Breathing, and I’ll also be able to move longer than with just the Hinokami Kagura!” – Tanjiro, Entertainment District Arc, Episode 9
Sun Breathing vs. Water Breathing

Among the two, Sun Breathing emerges as the superior technique, proving more congruent with Tanjiro’s physical makeup. As his journey progresses, it has become evident that he employs Sun Breathing with increased frequency. The Hashira Training Arc has significantly amplified his capabilities, suggesting that he may soon rely exclusively on Sun Breathing as he hones this powerful method.
The narrative of Demon Slayer is poised on the brink of its climax, with Tanjiro gearing up for an ultimate confrontation with Muzan. In this critical battle, his mastery of Sun Breathing—crafted by the very person who threatened Muzan—will play a pivotal role.
