Within the captivating world of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro and Yoriichi emerge as strikingly similar characters. Despite being separated by centuries, both bear the mark of the Demon Slayer, share various techniques, and even exhibit physical resemblances. However, the question looms: Did Tanjiro ever surpass Yoriichi in strength?
The Legend of Yoriichi Tsugikuni

Yoriichi Tsugikuni, a legendary Demon Slayer from Japan’s Sengoku period, lived 500 years before the events that unfold in the series during the Taisho Era. Renowned as the most formidable Demon Slayer, he is credited with the creation of the Breathing Styles, including the prestigious Sun Breathing technique, which is the progenitor of all the others.
Much like Tanjiro, Yoriichi experienced tragedy in his family, including losing his twin brother, Kokushibo, to demon transformation, as well as suffering the heart-wrenching loss of his wife and unborn child to a demon attack. Despite being the unrivaled warrior in the narrative, Yoriichi is depicted as a calm and level-headed individual, maintaining his composure even in the face of formidable foes like Muzan.
Tanjiro’s Connection to Yoriichi

Yoriichi shared a unique bond with Sumiyoshi Kamado, an ancestor of Tanjiro who bore a striking resemblance to him. After rescuing Sumiyoshi’s family from demons—while Sumiyoshi’s pregnant wife was close to giving birth—Yoriichi developed a friendship with him. He confided in Sumiyoshi about his life, his tragic losses, and his battles against Muzan, including the pivotal moment he hesitated and allowed Muzan to escape.
Possessing an exceptional memory, Sumiyoshi was able to memorize the Sun Breathing technique and eventually passed it down to his descendants, embedding it as a cherished family legacy within the Kamado lineage.
The Reason Tanjiro Falls Short of Yoriichi
A persistent question among fans is whether Tanjiro is stronger than Yoriichi. While Tanjiro showcases tremendous growth and strength, the narrative clearly establishes that he never surpasses Yoriichi’s unparalleled prowess. Yoriichi remains a legendary figure within the Demon Slayer Corps, deemed the strongest warrior to ever exist.
Despite the possibility of another character eventually exceeding a legendary warrior’s capabilities, the series reinforces that Muzan—a formidable opponent to both Tanjiro and Yoriichi—acknowledged that Yoriichi’s techniques remain unmatched, putting Tanjiro at a considerable distance from his predecessor’s skill level.
Demon King Tanjiro Versus Yoriichi

If regular Tanjiro struggles to match Yoriichi, what of the Demon King Tanjiro? Being resistant to sunlight grants him a significant edge—notably, the ability to withstand Bright Red Blades.
While it remains speculative, Yoriichi’s remarkable speed, skill, and overall prowess situate him on a distinct tier compared to others. Although Demon King Tanjiro possesses immense power, he faces inherent limitations. It is conceivable that Yoriichi’s unmatched abilities could allow him to exploit any openings, similar to how he interacted with Muzan during their battle.
Ultimately, determining the victor of such a hypothetical clash remains challenging. However, considering Yoriichi’s character and ethical nature, he might unintentionally offer an advantage, akin to his pivotal moment with Muzan.
