One of the most well-known retro emulators available on the App Store, the Delta Emulator, supports various platforms and provides a user-friendly interface. This emulator is set to receive a significant update that will introduce online multiplayer support.
The developer of Delta Emulator, Riley Testut, announced via The Verge that a beta version will be rolled out with online multiplayer capabilities for Nintendo DS games. Initially, this beta version will be available to Patreon subscribers, with no public release date set at this time. Delta Emulator, which started on iPhones, officially became available for iPad as of July on the App Store.
This new multiplayer functionality for Nintendo DS titles is a notable enhancement, particularly since the platform previously supported online multiplayer through third-party Nintendo Wi-Fi connection services such as Kaeru, Wimmfi, and AltWFC. Unfortunately, these services were discontinued in 2014 for both Nintendo DS and Wii, although third-party alternatives have since emerged.
Testut mentioned, “This means all 10 million+ Delta users will be able to connect with other Delta users and those on actual devices utilizing these third-party Nintendo WFC servers.”He added that, for now, the multiplayer support is strictly for Nintendo DS games, but all titles that utilized Nintendo WFC will be compatible.
As reported by The Verge, the Delta Emulator will leverage the Melon DS emulator’s capabilities to provide this online multiplayer feature. Fortunately, there is no shortage of Nintendo DS titles that offer online multiplayer experiences, including popular games like Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, Diddy Kong Racing DS, and Clubhouse Games.
Following Apple’s relaxation of its App Store policies, a plethora of emulators have emerged in the app market. You might want to check out iDOS 3 for DOS games, Folium for Nintendo 3DS, PPSSPP for PlayStation titles, RetroArch for a variety of consoles, and many others.
