Recent reports suggest that Apple has adjusted its plans regarding the release of updated MacBook Pro models powered by the M5 chip. Instead of a launch this year, the tech giant is now expected to introduce the M5 MacBook Pro early next year. This revelation comes alongside news of other anticipated product launches, including the iPhone 17e. Consequently, the OLED MacBook Pro featuring the M6 chip may also face delays.
Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro Featuring M6 Chip Could Experience Further Delays
According to Bloomberg’s industry analyst Mark Gurman, Apple will not be refreshing any Mac models with the M5 chip before this year concludes. The M5 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air are now projected for a Spring 2024 launch. This shift marks a departure from Gurman’s earlier predictions that indicated a rollout would occur by the end of this year. Apple had previously unveiled its M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max MacBook Pro models last October, indicating a possible shift from their tradition of annual updates.
In addition to the M5 MacBook Pro, Apple had plans to release the M5 iPad Pro models, which have also diverged from their usual Spring launch schedule. While it remains uncertain whether Apple will still announce the M5 iPad Pro, historical patterns strongly suggest it is plausible. For instance, in May of the previous year, Apple introduced the M4 chip alongside the new OLED iPad Pro models, followed by the M4 MacBook Pro models in October. If this pattern holds, the M5 iPad Pro could potentially be announced later in the year.
Collectively, several new devices are set to launch in early 2024:
- M5 MacBook Pro models
- M4 iPad Air
- New entry-level iPad with enhanced performance
- M5 MacBook Air
- iPhone 17e
- New Mac external display
While updates to the MacBook Pro may be slight, involving mostly performance enhancements, the anticipated M6 MacBook Pro upgrade promises to be substantially more transformative. Expected features of the M6 MacBook Pro include an OLED display replacing the current miniLED, thinner bezels, and a sleeker profile overall. Notably, various analysts have speculated that the first OLED MacBook Pro may not arrive until 2026. Should Apple decide to delay the M5 MacBook Pro release until then, a corresponding OLED M6 model would also face a postponed launch, potentially causing further shifts in Apple’s scheduled product unveils. However, precise details are still scarce as supply chain information remains limited.
As this story develops, it is important to approach the news with a degree of caution, as early reports are often subject to change. We will provide updates as more information comes in.
