A New Frontier: DeepSeek’s Pursuit of In-House AI Chips

In recent months, DeepSeek has made significant strides, evolving from a side project into a formidable player in the global AI landscape, particularly with the introduction of its advanced large language models (LLMs).This emergence has allowed the company to compete effectively with established entities like OpenAI, particularly its renowned GPT models. Despite earlier reports stating that DeepSeek struggled with limited computing resources, further findings have contradicted this narrative. According to DigiTimes, the firm is now actively considering the development of its own AI chips, aligning with a growing trend among major AI companies pursuing similar initiatives.

While details on DeepSeek’s chip development remain scarce, insider reports suggest the company has initiated a significant recruitment campaign for semiconductor specialists to spearhead the project. However, the journey to create AI chips is fraught with challenges, particularly concerning the complex supply chain required for semiconductor manufacturing. For Chinese firms, the primary hurdle is accessing advanced semiconductor technologies, especially in light of prevailing global sanctions. Currently, DeepSeek’s access is largely limited to local sources such as SMIC, which are considerably behind the global semiconductor advancements.

Currently, DeepSeek is thought to possess around 10, 000 NVIDIA “China-specific”H800 AI GPUs and an additional 10, 000 of the high-end H100 chips, aggregating nearly $1 billion worth of computational resources. Although the company faces trade restrictions imposed by the U. S., these challenges have not significantly hindered its progress. It appears DeepSeek has maintained access to equipment comparable to its competitors, potentially sporting additional undisclosed resources. Moreover, the firm is also utilizing inference workloads on Huawei’s Ascend AI chips, showcasing its diversified technology portfolio.

Despite its smaller scale compared to giants like OpenAI, DeepSeek’s exploration of in-house chip production is a commendable initiative, as it could enhance diversity within the AI sector. The paramount question, however, is whether DeepSeek can successfully advance to the implementation phase of this ambition.
