Overview of 2024 Console Sales in Europe
- Sales of gaming consoles in Europe experienced a significant decline in 2024, prompted by market saturation and a dearth of new product releases.
- The PlayStation 5 Pro was the sole new entrant from major manufacturers, yet it was insufficient to counteract the overall sales downturn.
- The total gaming sales in Europe reflected only a 1% increase in 2024, with digital purchases rising while physical sales dwindled.
The year 2024 proved to be challenging for video game console sales across Europe, affecting major platforms including Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. This period marked a notable decline in the sale of new consoles, although some positive trends within the gaming industry could be observed.
During this year, the big three console manufacturers released only one new product: the PlayStation 5 Pro. This upgraded version of the existing PS5 garnered considerable interest among fans seeking enhanced performance. However, despite the Pro’s launch, it did not significantly boost overall sales figures in Europe, which continued to show a downward trajectory compared to previous years.
A report from Video Games Chronicle highlighted a troubling trend, revealing that sales of gaming consoles plummeted by 21% year-on-year. Specifically, sales for the PlayStation, thanks to the PS5 Pro, still saw a decrease of 20%. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch suffered a 15% reduction in sales, and the Xbox Series X/S experienced a staggering 48% drop. Analysts attribute this decline to the stagnation of the console market, given that the original PS5 and Xbox Series consoles were launched in 2020 and the Nintendo Switch debuted back in 2017. Interestingly, the Meta Quest 3S managed to outsell all major gaming consoles on Amazon’s US platform, suggesting a shift in consumer interest away from traditional consoles.
Trends in Gaming Sales and Future Prospects
Overall, the gaming industry in Europe saw limited growth in 2024, with a total of 188.1 million PC and console games sold, marking only a 1% increase from the previous year. While any growth is a positive indicator, it is likely below the expectations set by many game publishers. The data further reflects a shift in consumer habits, with digital game sales climbing to 131.6 million—a 15% rise—while physical copies fell to 56.5 million, decreasing by 22% compared to 2023.
Looking ahead, 2025 is anticipated to bring better fortunes for the gaming sector in Europe and beyond, particularly with the impending release of the Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to drive strong sales. However, it should be noted that the reported console sales figures do not include key markets such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria. The exclusion of these regions may suggest that the overall sales outlook for 2024 could be viewed in a more favorable light if these territories were included.
